Anti Gunner/ Colin Powell

Anybody a little miffed at the prospect of this openly anti in the new admin, if Bush finally slays the vote recount dragon?.
If memory serves me correctly, Mr. Powell, advocated registration of handguns a while back.
Correct me if I'm incorrect, but I definitely seem to remember this.
And was dumbfounded that a military man of his stature would openly advocate such a measure.
i'm all for mending fences, and hugging each other, but I DO not want to see dubyah making friends at our expense.
A little leaven spoils the whole loaf...........

As Secretary of State, I don't much care. I don't love his politics, but when W started talking about Jim Hunt as Sctry of Ed, I shutter. He may be worse for us than Al Gore, but not by much. I don't want a man who wants the job, I want a man with a vision and a passion for leadership. Neither candidate has either. This election would have been something if there were a Bill Bradley vs Alan Keyes choice. I'm still miffed at how Al Gore beat the decent and honest (but still a socialist) Bradley. I don't see how Keyes didn't get it. I guess we're not quite yet ready for a thinking President. I'll take an honest one if I have to, so I'll take W for four more years.

The SecState's office doesn't have any possible gun-control function. We're OK there. The VP's slot sometimes does, Cheney is cool, so that's all good.

Dunno about this guy Jim Hunt, never heard of him. One of Bush's themes in education is "local control" so if he sticks with that, Hunt may not have a whole lot to do except make sound bites.

I *really* want to know about picks for DOJ, Treasury and FBI.

Jim

Jim Hunt???????????

You gotta be kidding, Hunt, Demo Gov. of N.C. Education Sec.? We don't need him. He has blackmailed N.C. Legislature for the last 8 years to get what he wants. Smart start, HIS pet project gets funding before everything else. Surely to God GW didn't seriously consider this jerk.
He openly flaunts his political deals. Geeze, ya gotta be kidding!

Jim Hunt is the highly liberal Governor of NC. He advocates condom distribution in schools, and many other practices that I find morally repugnant, and wish my tax dollars not to fund. If parents want to give out condoms, and condone homosexuality, fine. Don't make me pay for it, or have my kids learn it. Jim Hunt sucks. Maybe we could leave the Sctry of Ed position unfilled for four years. We might be better off. For Sec tres, I'd like to see Dennis. With the Director of FBI I'd like to see Law Dog (but firmly under Dennis' control). How's that for picks?

Hah!

I'd rather be Director of the ATF. I'd set a new world record for putting myself out of work.

"What do you mean, you laid off the entire Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms?!"

Plus, I would imagine the first time I showed up for work at Fan Belt Inspector headquarters in boots, jeans and a Hooters sweatshirt the FBI would lose the entire senior staff to apoplexy. I hear they're a bit anal about their 'image'. :D

Cabinet Members

The worst possible choice is Rick Lazio as secretary of HUD. Lazio is very anti gun and would probably continue Andrew Cuomo's lawsuits!

This is one area where we could be hurt by Bush's choice of cabinet members. Watch out for this one!

Geoff Ross

GW's current education advisor, Margaret De La Montagne, would make a better Sec. of Ed. I remember the good old days when the republicans promised to eliminate this useless department.

Since JFK and RFK set the precedent for nepotism, what would be wrong with having Jeb Bush serve as Treasury Secretary? He's had enough financial experience, what with the Silverado episode in Colorado.

TShoes can you please provide verification of Colin Powell's anti views.

In Colin Powell's autobiography, "A Soldier's Way" he mentions his ownership of firearms and his father in laws arsenal [his father in law was a Black high school principal in Birmingham, Alabama].

Colin Powell also states that he would be the "poster boy for the NRA"[pg 537], if he carried all the guns the Russians gave him [as gifts] over the years.

He also mention's taking his father shooting at an Army range and his treasured gift of a shotgun from Mikhail Gorbachev [pg 587].

There is also an incident, where he was nearly arrested in a Gov parking lot while showing a friend a WW2 Japanese rifle, from his car boot [pg 299].

Colin Powell's views on the 2nd are not discussed in his book, yet the anecdotal evidence seem's somewhat hopeful.

Regardless of his views on the 2nd he would be a remarkable emmissary for the U.S., as he is respected [or feared] in the international world and is a quantum leap over the current joke of SecState!

Colin Powell

JOSH, no sir, sorry I cannot.

If my memory serves me correctly (and remember, this was right after Desert Storm),I seem to recall it being said in an interview with a network liberal.............

Any one else on here remember this?, or am I dreaming???
The reason it stuck in my mind, is that I was so taken aback from what I expected to hear..........

One would expect a soldier of his Ilk, to be an IN YOUR FACE 2nd Amendment supporter.

Thanks for the low down you guys on the other potential appointees.

Like I said, a little leaven spoils the whole loaf........
We shall see......after all, it couldn't be any WORSE than the commies we have put up with for the past eight yrs.:)

It is not just what these cabinet official would do as heads of their departments but what they would advocate enmasse in cabinet meetings as they advise the President on other issues and laws not germaine to their departments.

Rick

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but the gist of this discussion seems to be that Cabinet Secretaries will act on their own in pressing their personal agendas and overpower the President and Vice President in Cabinet meetings.

This would suggest the belief that Mr. Bush is a mindless, sack of jello sans backbone. Is this really what peoples' impression is? Did you vote for that kind of person? Libertarians need not answer that last question.

We have become, over the last eight years, inured to the notion that Cabinet members seemingly act individually. We have to understand that everything that has happened in the last eight years has been orchestrated from the White House.

After Bush, IMHO, the two most important people in this Administration will be Dick Cheney and the Chief of Staff. If these two, and we already know about Cheney, are on the side of we, the angels we should feel certainly comfortable.

Mixing oil & water

John, no you are correct, I as Caesar, would want like minded people surrounding ME.
I don't understand the olive branch notion that you can tame wild animals.............
They will always be wild at heart, and sooner or later they will turn on the hand that feeds them.
Recognizing they have no power, doesn't appease my thinking that people need to be rewarded for faithfulness to the party, and rewarded thusly.
My contention is, a little leaven spoils the whole loaf.....
If you have pure gold, and start adding alloy's, you make it worth less.......same with belief systems, start adding people of a different mindset, and soon you have a hodge podge of people who by way of exposure have become a different breed of cat............

John,

The answer is yes.

Cabinet secretaries hold real influence over the president whom the serve. Even LBJ and FDR used the debates of cabinet secretaries to form policy. It is a political reality. Anyone who thinks it is not the case should rethink.

Read "Inside the Oval Office" by William Doyle. Among other things, it covers the managment styles of presidents from Harding to Clinton.

Pro-2 types have screwed and tatoo'd so many times in the past that there is a tendency to flinch before pulling the trigger. I follow Powell's career and have never heard anything from him or attributed to him that is remotely negative toward #2. He may have sympathies some may feel uncomfortable with but considering that fact that no one gave him anything and he still made the bigtime, maybe we could cut the man some slack.

We are about to conclude 8 years of the most mind-boggling incompetitance in foreign affairs. The situation is worse than the blind leading the blind. It is criminal when you fold in the treason that has taken place. This country will need the absolute best minds available to repair the damage. Colin Powell is one of the best. Fold him in the the new VP and you've got the makings of a superbowl team. SecDef is concerned with different issues than the 2nd amendment. Just remember Dick Chaney his both Dubya's and Colin's ear at all times. Chaney clearly stood up to the hysteria of "cop killer" bullets (do not exist) and the assault weapon ban.

I feel real comfortable with Powell as SecDef.

Jim Hunt is a liberal loser govenor of NC. A definite mistake. NC puts an inhuman amount of money in education and it still ranks near the bottom.

Powell's a "team player"

I don't profess to be an expert, but Powell strikes me as a "team player". I think he would support the platform of his boss. So I'm not too worried about his personal opinions. I don't think he would let them over power the platform. So we need to be concerned about what the platform is.

I think he would be good for the country overall, both because of his international rep, and his "PC diversity".

Regarding Hunt, let's all hope he reall meant it a few days ago when he said that he didn't want the job even if it were offered to him.......

Hey, unless many of you guys are forgetting your misspent youths, kids are gonna fool around with each other. It's truly amazing how well the different sexes fit together. I can't see criticizing a political type for admitting that "Hey, kids are doing this, and we need to make sure that that's all they're doing" - that they're not gonna be wandering in some evening, and announcing that there's gonna be an addition to the family. Sounds like common sense to me. If you're so darn worried that your kids are gonna go out and have a worse misspent youth than yours (and hey, I WORKED at mine...), spend more time with 'em at home.
