anti-gun wife turns into gun freak

It's taken me two years to coax my wife from "guns scare me, I don't want you to buy one" to "if you must have a gun, I don't want them in the house" to "keep one gun in the bedroom safe, for you to protect us". She's been terrified of guns(refers to my gun club as "Ruby Ridge"), but has become increasing curious of my enthusiasm towards shooting until she approached me about taking her to the range to learn to shoot. I took her this past Monday to "Ruby Ridge", with just my S&W 22A outfitted with a red dot sight, and allowed her to do all the shooting, while i supplied instruction and encouragement. We spent all day at the range, with my wife going thru 150 rounds. I had to drag her off the bullseye range with her protests of, "just one more target...I'll even put it up". After I showed her shotgun hill, she asked if I owned a shotgun and when I replied that I didn't, she insisted that WE get one soon because she wanted to try clay pigeons! She saved all her targets to proudly show our kids later and told me that she thought WE should take my daughter to the range next because my wife thinks that my daughter will really like shooting. I tell this story to encourage those men out there that have spouses that are fearful of firearms or anti-gun...take it slow, be methodical, don't push....but get your lady to the range when she's ready, and you may gain another shooting partner like I did. Oh, by the way,..she doesn't refer to OUR gun club as "Ruby Ridge" any more........Dan in GA

Congratz. It can be a slow tedious process...but once you get them to the range they are addicted.
I have had the pleasure of teaching a few anti's to shoot, and once they do, they LOVE it.
You see, they FEAR the gun, so for them to shoot it and conquer that fear is very exhilerating. They get a real rush from it. And they love it. Next thing you know, they know how to properly handle a gun, they understand it, and they no longer fear that it is just going to "go off", and they want to buy a bunch.

On the other hand, I have never understood how someone can be so against guns when they have never really shot one or learned how they work. There are so many people like that.

It's good to hear stuff like this.
I was cleaning my newest little addition last night and my wife showed some interest. She hasn't shown much enthusiasm in the past but has agreed to go with me shooting some time and let me show her how. Last night she held the three pistols I own, asking me about how they function, made sure she nows how to get to them and chamber a round if she needs to... she's coming around!
Good job, Dan. Just don't be too angry if she starts outshooting you. ;)

My wife had never fired a gun until about a year ago. I finally convinced her to go with me to get our CCW permits. After only 3 sessions out behind the house, she decided she was ready. When we took the live fire test, they took us outside one by one. Without her knowing, all the guys ran to the window to watch her shoot. She outshot probably half of the men that were there, with only one shot that was a little wide of the mark. Made me kinda proud when the guy next to me, turned and said "Buddy, you're in deep trouble if you get outta line".

To All:

Here's my own experience... I wonder how much of this is the fact that she's Irish?

She came to our country four and a half years ago, under protest but coming because she loved me. Hated America (the image of it, apparently) and couldn't stand most Americans.

This morning she's posting a vitriolic letter to the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority and Minority Leaders, the Attorney General, and the campaigns of both candidates - quoting from her pocketbook Constitution. She's not happy about the legal maneuvers of the Gore Campaign, and I'm certainly hearing about it!

I'm going to have to contact Star Trek and ask for one of those political-gravity-field enhancers....

Here's the link she sent it on - fill out one form, and it goes to all those recipients:

To All:

My wife just graciously reminded me to inform everyone that one of the first things she learned in America...

...was how to reload ammunition. :)

She's also a crack shot with the .222 Remington. One of the things I remember was about a year after she came here, once she'd seen the American political climate and recognized where it's headed.

"Time to start burying rifles."

She grew up in Northern Ireland, walking through British Army checkpoints on the way to school, and seeing the Ulster Defense Regiment on manuevers in the country.

You know the joke about why the Irish oil their lawns? To keep the guns from rusting....

I bring this up because of the nature of committed human determination. Look at Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom began its slide towards total gun confiscation and control in an attempt to deny the fledgling Irish Republican Army the power of arms.

Nearly a hundred years later, the land of Ireland probably has more guns buried there, than there are in circulation in most nations. And the IRA is no longer a fringe terrorist group - it's a legitimate part of the power-sharing government in the last area where British rule remains. They won the rest. Not through arms, true - but those arms permitted it. The threat of those arms in fact preserve the basis of their power....

Small wonder for the source of our gun control politicians here.
