UTICA, N.Y. (Reuters/Zogby) - As the National Rifle Association continues to be a key player in the debates over gun control political platforms, a recent Zogby poll of 1,002 adults nationwide reveals that 56.7% of those surveyed said they support positions held by the NRA when they head to the polls.
The survey revealed that 41% of voters said they never support NRA positions.
As expected there was a sharp contrast down political lines. An overwhelming 75% of Republicans support NRA positions on election day while 53% of Independents also support the positions held by the NRA. In contrast, a majority of Democrats (54%) say that they never support NRA positions.
Election Day support for the NRA comes more from the South (62%), West (59%), and Central Great Lakes (58%) than the East (48%). Also, residents of rural areas were also much more likely to support the NRA, by a two to one margin; 67% support vs. 30% who do not.
In large cities, support was almost an even split with 50% supporting the NRA vs. 47% who do not.
The survey also revealed that 70.2% of Americans who felt that things in the Unites States were headed down the wrong track supported positions held by the NRA when going to the polls.
What we asked:
``Please tell me whether you support the National Rifle Association's positions when you go to the polls?''
