Another Taurus 85 trigger spring challenge

so I opened my Taurus 85 UL with the intent to do a Wolff Springs replacement on the hammer spring and trigger return spring.

I got everything disassembled fine. parts all cleaned up.

I am able to get all the parts back in and everything cycles fine without the trigger spring. DA mode works. SA mode works - without the trigger spring.

When I put the trigger spring back in - either the original or one of the Wolff replacement springs - for some reason I can't get the trigger pulled far enough back to go through a complete DA cycle or to release from SA cock-back. If I pull really hard on the trigger at the end of the trigger pull - it will go, but something is not right. And again, what's puzzling is everything seems to work and align fine with the trigger spring out - no tension on the trigger.

Also, the transfer bar/arm thingy that sandwhiches between the firing pin and the hammer to enable a shot - it is supposed to flop back and forth? It is seated in the hole in the trigger, but the top of it flops back and forth when the hammer is pulled back.

Any suggestions on the trigger spring, trigger pull puzzle?

thanks

I actually helped a friend replace springs in a very similar Taurus. I found a schematic online - it might have been at Brownell's - if you want to make sure everything is linked up as it should.

Unfortunately, the Wolf springs didn't do the trick. DA trigger pull is still crap. Some lighter ones would be nice, and then it would really be good to polish the moving parts at some point.

Found that schematic - e-gunparts, not Brownells.

thanks for the link to the schematic...

I am pretty confident things are put back together correctly. Again, everything synchs and works without the trigger spring. Hammer spring is in - no problem.

Yeah just wasn't sure if it would be any help. Tauruses (or at least some of their revolvers) aren't designed to be dry-fired, and so the firing pin can break sometimes. The forever warranty is helpful to get those parts. So you might want to double-check the integrity of your firing pin, or make sure there's no little firing pin spring missing, if it's moving around. I'm not sure if that's supposed to have freedom of motion (although I can't say because it's been a while and I'm not the biggest revolver guy). Pull it in DA and hold the trigger down, see if the firing pin's sticking out, and then make sure it retracts properly as you release the trigger, would probably be the easiest function-check that.

Barring that... I recall that the trigger spring center pin and trigger spring were kind of a "b" to get back in. Make sure the pin and spring are oriented correctly and not bowing in any direction, interfering with the moving parts. That's all I can really think if you're sure everything else is in place.

Sorry if I'm not much help, it's been a while since I've seen it, just figured I'd brainstorm with you :p

thanks bclark.

yeah, the firing pin is in the frame - there is the transfer arm/paddle thingamabob that rises up and then the hammer slaps the tranfer arm which in turn hits the back of the firing pin... anyway, that mechanism is working.

i'll recheck the trigger return spring post and spring.. that's the bugger - no trigger return spring, it works.. factory trigger spring back in, it's like the spring compresses and is too big to allow the trigger all the way back to release the sear. so still studying it..

When I helped a friend install the Wolff spring-pack in his Taurus 85UL we had to clip a link from either the trigger or hammer spring, pretty sure it was the trigger spring, to allow enough travel for the hammer to drop.

About the trigger sucking: His is DAO and when he sent it back to have a timing issue fixed they did an incredible trigger job.

mitch,

thanks, yes I've thought about that - clipping a link in the spring. The puzzler to me is it's doing this on the original factory spring when I reasssemble but it was not doing it before.

Taurus 85 Trigger Issues

I know this is an old thread, but it was useful to me and I wanted to share my tail of woe in regards to Taurus triggers. I decided to do a trigger job on my wife's Taurus model 85 blue steel 2" 38 special. When I pulled the cover off I noticed that the trigger spring center pin was a little bent, but at the time I wasn't sure that wasn't designed that way. The schematic in the manual was not that clear. I also didn't know the easy way to re-install that spring and pin and as a result, it snapped in 2 right at the bottom of the stem. Needless to say I was freaking out, because my wife and I are taking our CWP class this weekend and she wants to use that gun for the shooting test. Fortunately, I have a Model 85 Protector Poly that I don't use much and thought maybe I can swap the pin from that one, then I can buy a replacement pin on the internet and restore the poly 85. Well it turns out that Taurus no longer sells parts to anyone. I'm sure this isn't news to this forum. Numrich listed several center pins, but all were sold out and the only way they would be restocked is if they bought some from some gunsmith fire sale or some such. So I decided to see if Taurus would send me the part or even sell it to me. No way said the Taurus CS rep. "We don't distribute any parts outside Taurus anymore". She said I would have to send it in for repair since trigger parts were restricted items (I think everything mist be restricted). I said I would rather buy it from Numrich and and install it myself. She said that would void my warranty and since I went beyond field stripping to discover this, I had already voided my warranty. I suppose I could have just sent it to them for paid repair, but I've had bad luck sending in repairs to Taurus, which I'll save for a later posting. The good news is that the pin from the 85 poly fit the blue steel gun and the trigger job vastly improved the trigger pull, so my marriage is in good shape now. The other good news is that I found a gunsmith that will make me a pin for $40 and that is still cheaper than the cost of mailing the gun to Taurus for a repair I was likely going to have to pay for. I hate to say it, but because of this restrictive policy on parts and mods, I will probably not buy another Taurus firearm. That is a shame, since I really liked their Model 992, but no matter, I can't find one anywhere.

The new Wolff M85 trigger spring is compressing fully and prevents the trigger from traveling enough to trip for firing. I had the same problem with my M94,
I clipped a couple coils off the spring and it worked OK...

The trigger pin swivel, that's the round stud the pin slides through, should revolve or move, as the pin is straight. It sounds to me like you have a spring that is too long. Compare it to the old one, and if it is, cut it to that length. Make sure to bend over the wire on the end, with needle-nose pliers, and don't let it stick out or up to catch on anything. Just bend it down a small amount, so it sits flush like the other end.
