One of my carry guns is an old flat-latch M40 Centennial that a previous owner zipped into a padded case and left in the closet for 20 years. At his beach house. Nice salty air at the beach you know. Guns in cases can breathe and moist air gets trapped in the case. Yup, was rusted hulk by the time he got around to checking on it. Traded it in on new gun and smith polished it as best he could (still much pitting) and parkerized it. Ugly as hell but works fine. At $180 I had to have it. I don't worry about carrying it because there isn't much I could do to damage it at this point.
