Another S&W M10 ?

OK. I picked up a mystery. S&W M10-7, 4", blue, lanyard ring, smooth and wide trigger, firing pin on hammer and plain checkered wood grips. A nice M&P revolver. The backstrap is marked C&E 1222. AEP20XX is stamped on the bottom of the gripframe. Any ideas? It is a accurate little revolver. Smooth action and the single action breaks like glass. Limited wear. I am happy, I just don't know what I got. There are no import or foriegn proof marks.

Hmmmm? That is the number in the normal serial number location. The AEP20XX isn't the serial number to my knowledge. I asked because of a lack of knowledge on this M&P. One suggestion was that it was a contract overrun.

AEP could be the serial # as the 10-7 started in 1977 and continued until 1988 when the 10-9 was introduced. The book is a bit vague but AEP would correspond to 1984. The problem is AEP isn't listed specifically as a serial prefix but there are many gaps in the listings.

I have a 2" -7 that starts 11D. It was made in 1982. The transition years from that type of serial # to the 2 letter type were 1980-83 starting with the L frames. Eventually all guns were #ed this way.

Your "C&E 1222'" stands for the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Police, badge number 1222. I've had one for a few months now....bought it for my wife actually. Her's belonged to badge #1122. It shoots fine, just a tad low right of point of aim with 158 gr. loads.

William,

The AEP number IS the serial number -- 3 letters followed by digits is the correct serial convention for a gun of this age.

There has never been a model 10 made with a 5 digit, no letter serial number.

There have been Military & Police Model of 1902s made with 5 digit serial numbers, but those were all made prior to World War I.

Floor assembly numbers are stamped on the gun during manufacture, long before the serial numbers are assigned.

Thanks all! Mike, what I was confused about was the AEP falls into a grey area. More confusion than information from references I found. I did HOPE this was Customs & Excise Police S&W. It fits right in with my Royal Hong Kong Police S&W and Colt Police Positive Special. I appreciate that information. I may have to get another one.

Not sure what the grey area would be, but I suggest that you get a copy of Supica and Nahaus' "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson."
