Another Rossi ranch hand question

As I said in an earlier post I'm interested in a .44mag version as a backpacking/camping self-defense gun. Other than that "practical" use I just think it's very "cool", which is reason enough for me to want one. The one drawback to me is the oversize loop. I contacted Rossi customer service and was told the loop is not interchangeable with the standard size ones on their other 92 carbines. I went on to contact three custom gunsmiths here in NY. Two of them refused immediately, The last one was willing to reshape, weld, and reblue the factory loop but Quoted a price of $430. Nearly the price of the gun itself. I have no experience with custom gunsmiths so I may be way off base, but that price seems VERY high to me. Am I wrong? also, if anyone has some expertise, is it possible to simply buy a standard size loop from the company and alter it to fit the Ranch Hand? Does anybody make an aftermarket loop that will work with the RH? What do you think?

Yes very high $, maybe not for the work described (still is high IMO) but as a distracting recommendation. Everyone needs to make money, granted, but they're doing you an incredible disservice not just rec'ing a swap for a factory standard lever. For a smith, very simple swap. Some have done the opposite as you, so there should be a few spares out there. Contact Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones - www.stevesgunz.com website) or M&M gunsmithing ( www.mmgunsmithing.com ) as I think someone mentioned. Virtually any Rossi-made standard lever dating back to the '70s should work. LSI (Legacy) "Pumas" are the most common out there and--up until 2009 or so--are simply Rossis distributed by them.

i was thinking of getting one and wanted to swap out the lever, but if they are not interchangeable i guess id have to reshape, beat, bend curse and weld the existing one...
