I am currently spending a couple weeks in Eastern Ohio visiting my parents. I have a few guns that I keep here for my enjoyment while visiting. The highlight of my Eastern collection is a S&W Model 17 that my father has owned since before my birth, as far as I know. He offically gave it to me a couple years ago. I have no idea how he originally got it, he has no interest in guns at all. Anyway, the serial number is K3373XX. When was it made ? Also, could someone go through the story again about the difference between the K22 and the Model 17 ? My dad always called this gun a K22, but I don't believe that is correct; or is it ?

According to Supica and Nahaus, 1st edition, the gun was made in 1958, or right around the time the switch was made to model numbering.

The K-22 and the Model 1917 are actually the same gun, just different designations.

On Monday the gun rolling off the line was a K-22 Masterpiece (Postwar, 3rd Model), on Tuesday the gun rolling off the line was a K-22 Masterpiece (Postwar, 3rd Model) Model 17, or simply Model 17.

Molly, thank you, that is a very handy little chart for those of us without a S&W reference library.

I ended up firing about 800 rounds out of it while I was there. All serious attempts at improving my skills, no random plinking. I sometimes think about bringing it home to reside with the rest of my collection, but I have so much fun with it there since there isn't a whole lot else to do.

Oh and last but not least, thank you Mike. I was fairly certain you would reply and give me the goods.
