Another Reminton 870 question

Is there a difference between a 12, 16 or 20 gauge Remington 870 trigger assemblies? If so, what are the differences? Could I take out my plastic 12 gauge assembly and replace it with an aluminum 20 gauge assembly? Are there parts that I would have to take off of the 12 gauge and transfer to the 20 gauge (I'm not even sure it is 20 gauge) to make it work? I looked at the parts list and schematic on the Numrich web site and it appears that they share the same part numbers.

Here's the deal, I picked up a beautiful aluminum trigger assembly but I have no idea what gauge 870 it came out of. Both assemblies look similar, carrier and such but for I know it could be a 12, 16 or 20. I just know that I really want it on my 870.

I've owned and worked on lots of guns over the years but this is my first 870 and I really like it. I just need to get knowledgable about them.

Standard answer number 1. "It depends".

There are some 20 ga. 870's that were built on full-size frames. As far as I know, all 16 ga. guns were built on full-size frames. I have a couple 12 ga. guns here with trigger groups from 16 ga. guns installed. I have a 16 ga. WM with a 12 ga. group. No trouble. I usually also add a flex-tab lifter since I am monkeying around with the group.
I am guessing that the full-size frame 20 ga. assy's will also fit.
You say they "look similar". What looks different?

They look the same except one is plastic with a flex-plate carrier and the other is aluminum with an old style carrier. How much smaller is the small frame 20 gauge?

I am not sure how much smaller but if your "new" trigger fits without side-to-side slop, I'd say you're probably good to go.
I have never seen a small frame 20 ga. trigger out out of a gun but I would imagine that the difference in size would be quite obvious.
I know the difference between my bride's 20 ga. 1100 and the 12 ga. 1100 is easy to see when the groups are set next to each other and the 870 and 1100 trigger groups are very very similar.
