School Wants Child Drugged.
Accuses Parents Of Child Abuse When They Dare To Question
News With Attitude May 12 2000
Berne NY is a rural hilltown nestled in the Helderbergs about 20 minutes southwest of Albany. You'll find no shopping malls here. At first glance it appears to be an ideal place to live and raise a family. But an ugly and repugnant thing has happened here.
Like millions of other innocent children, Kyle Carroll started taking Ritalin last year, after he fell behind in his school work.
Like any normal parents, Kyle's parents grew concerned when the child only sleeping about five hours a night and eating just one meal a day at lunchtime. So they mentioned to school officials they wanted to take Kyle off Ritalin for two weeks to see if that helped.
This was a big mistake on their part. They did not understand the twisted mentality of the school officials
Not long after the fateful conversation, they got a call, then a visit, from a Child Protective Services worker.
They were dragged into family court in April. Nothing was resolved and now they must appear in court again later this month The upcoming hearing may give the Carrolls a chance to clear their name, but not completely. If cleared of the bogus charges, their case in the state register of alleged abusers will be sealed, but it could be opened in the future if there are other allegations of abuse.
In typical star chamber fashion the Carrolls do not know all the details of the charges against them. The so-called "intake report'' on their case alleges that the father is refusing to give the child the Ritalin. Additionally, complaints to Child Protective Services are also anonymous, so those who are accused don't know who has levelled the charges. In this case, however, the Carrolls say they were told that a school guidance counselor filed the malicious complaint. Several lines on the report are blacked out with a marking pen, so the parents don't even know the specific charges.
The took their child to another pediatrician for a second opinion. The doctor, of course recommended staying with the Ritalin, and the Carrolls, unfortunately, agreed. They agreed in part because they feared child welfare workers would take him away if they didn't.
Like too many other children, 7-year-old Kyle Carroll takes Ritalin for a diagnosis of the alleged and often misdiagnosed malady known as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.
The drug's serious side effects, including sleeplessness and loss of appetite are usually disregarded by pediatricians and over zealous school personnel.
Perhaps the most frightening thing is that this abomination is not an isolated incident. The real, professional child abusers who inhabit the government school system are increasingly accusing parents of child abuse and neglect if they dare resist giving their children potentially dangerous and damaging medication. such as Ritalin.
Several attempts by both print and broadcast media to get answers from child protective workers with the Albany County Department of Social Services proved fruitless. Only a shill for the county, Monica Mahaffey, would say anything and that amounted to the same old line you get when the totalitarians get caught abusing the populace. Mahaffey said social workers and others would not publicly discuss such matters. because of confidentiality.
A school official, Steven Schrade, used the same line about confidentiality. While Schrade contended that any drug prescription has to come from a physician, he did admit that school officials can recommend it.
