Another question about FFLs

First of all how much paper work is required to apply for a FFL. I was told that to buy sell guns you need a class 01 But to fix them (as in gunsmithing) you need a class 02. can someone verify or debunk this? Also what type of paperwork are you as the buyer/seller required to keep. Is this just a matter of filling out a standarized form for each firearm? Also what do they look for on the background check? Do they check juvenile records as well? (Done some things I' not proud of) I can pass a NICS check. is this the same check used when applying for a FFL?

I have been wondering these things myself.

It seems like if it wasn't that much trouble that it would be worth getting a FFL just to buy your own guns at a huge discount. Hopefully someone on here can enlighten us!

Getting an FFL

You fill out a bunch of paper work, EPA forms, finger print cards,Passport pic's, Have an interview, have to sign a paper saying your are going to sell not just buy for yourself. Takes about 8 months if memory serves me.

You have to be able to prove that you are engaging in business to make a profit from gun sales or they will deny you. Weeds out such people that try to broker 'buddy deals.' You prove a ligitimate reason for the need of an FFL.

That's another one to thank Bill Clinton for.

I had an FFL from 1989 to 1995. It sure didn't hurt the country or the economy, but Bill Clinton went and made it harder to get the guns you want without paying for the privilege.

As a matter of fact, IIRC there was a BIG push by stocking firearms dealers to pass the restrictions on FFL's. Our presence--the kitchen table dealers, as we were called--kept the retail business honest.

Powderman-
You can still get an FFL. If you are a ligitimate business selling or repairing firearms, there is no problem getting an FFL. There are many online sellers get FFL's and have no more than a house and a PC.

So what is needed in order to be considered a legitimate business?

A store front.

Also back when I helped with a paper work problem for our shop the ATF wanted a blueprint style drawing of the building including exact locations of both sales areas and storage area of the firearms.

Our last renewal they wanted to know how many guns came in and left for the last 3 years. In was easy out was a pain in the butt. Took me a couple hours to go through every 4473 and look to see how many guns were on each.
