I dunno if this is technically legal. I don't care.
Parts dealers often have pre-68 weapons receivers, unnumbered. You can't do a transfer with no number for the form. They sell them as spare parts.
I know people (not that I'll admit to any names) who buy the receivers, barrels, and stocks, and assemble adequate shotguns (single and double and occasionally bolt), and rifles (single and bolt) from such for less than $100.
They shoot reliably, and if weapons ever are banned, will be far superior to nothing. You could even keep one at home, one buried, one at the retreat, and one in the folks attic, if one were minded to, with a few boxes of ammo.
One last hideout, and one more way to f$%k with the system.
Just for my curiosity: is it legal?

“It is criminal not to teach a man to defend himself when he is the
constant victim of brutal attacks. It is legal and lawful to own a
shotgun or a rifle. We believe in obeying the law.”--Malcolm X
