Another M40A1 question.

Can someone tell me exactly what parts are in an M40A1? One of these days I'd like to have one built just for grins. Maybe I can accumulate the parts little by little. If I can just talk my wife into letting me blow $2500 on a Unertl 10x scope.

You can start with an Obermeyer 5R barrel. It's a rifling technique which we've adopted from the Russians and have found to be very accurate. The military rifle is also fitted to take an globe front and Olympic (or Palma - I'm not sure) rear sights as a backup sighting system.

You can also replace the recoil lug with a Chandler Lug. This is a precision made part and was also designed to facilitate removal of the action without damaging the bedding.

Replace the aluminum trigger guard with a steel one.

Replace the stock with an HS Precision aluminum bedded stock (or more modernly, a McMillan).

Check out the American Rifleman (last month's edition). It has an article on the M40A1 and its evolution into the newer M40A3.

M40 A1

Houndawg,
The standard M40A1's, have / had for the majority a Hart barrel, 1-12 twist, 24" in length.
The magazine box is tig welded to the bottom of the reciever.
The top of the reciever is clip slotted, to accept a Unertl style canted base.( allowing for shots to 1000 yards).
The originals, had Redfield rings, silver soldered into the Unertl base.
The original Redfield srews, on those bases, were bottom mount.
The stock, is a standard McMillan hunting stock, in Woodland Camo.
The standard bedding material is / has been Titanium Devcon.
The swivels, are Wichita's.
The recoil lug was standard Rem.
The standard triggerguard, and floorplate was, a Win 70 steel unit, set up to fit the Rem box mag.( modified).
Action, standard Rem, BR trued, and blueprinted.
Trigger, standard Rem, set at approx 3.5#'s....
These items, and more are/ have been changed with the advent of the NEW M40A3.
hope this answers most of your questions.................

Gary, no flames intended, but I think you mixed up the M24, with the M40A1................(:

Thanks.

Is that the January issue of American Rifleman?

Tshoes,

That was set up on a short action 700, right?

What changed in the M40A3 besides the stock. I remember seeing a thread with Gale talking about the A3 a while back.

M40A1

groundhawg.....No, that's straight from my head......
I have had the priveledge of owning a couple of clones, and have done a bit of reading prior to my investing in these pieces.
I will respond to your A4 question later, as I am late for a meeting..........
And yes, short action, the Army M24, is on a magnum action........

Gary, your doing fine...I'm sure you'll set me aright on an issue shortly(:
That's how we learn.............

houndawg / A3

As far as the data I have heard, and seen, the new M3,will have a Schneider barrel, not Hart.( has an M4 stock).
Also, the Unertl style base will be replaced by a Picatinney mount..........similar in that it fits the clip slotted reciever.( I think this is also a DD Ross piece).
It also extends over the front of the reciever, for NV, and special hardware some TBA, and some NOT TBA.........
The triggerguard assy, is I believe a piece by DD Ross...hell bent for stout, and one piece, not a two puece Win 70 as was used on the M40's late, and the M40A1's.
The scope is to be as issue USMC Unertl........
Look for this to change to MK4M3....I would not be surprised at all if it happened.
Bedding, I assume will remain Titanium Devcon.
The firm U S Optics, currently has the USMC contract for repair, and refurbishment of current models in inventory.
A company out of Ft. Worth owns the rights to the Unertl name.
As of today, they are gearing up to make EXACT duplicates oe the Original USMC 10X scope, sans..USMC marking.
They will be marketed as Unertl 10X.........
Price is a whopping $2,500.00 each, of course, plus shp & handling!!.......
Thanks, but no thanks for early 80's technology.......
U S Optics, is selling a model supposedly UPDATED, for the same $$$$$$$$....time will tell.
And this, boys, and girls is the jist of my limited expertise and knowledge on this issue.
