While we're waiting for hunting season this is not a bad way to wait.

Caught this one today just after sunrise. Not sure how much he really weighed as the scales we have at the fishmarket only go to 200 pounds but we did weigh some of the parts.

Head was 50 pounds.
Skin went 74 pounds.
One leg was 20 pounds.
Jowels, the muscle that closes the jaws, weighed 29 pounds. That kind of make the point of whay the alligator had the greates jaw pressure of any animal...........29 pounds of muscle closing the jaws!

Best guess on total weight is a little over 600 pounds......

Personally I can't tell the difference... A fried gator nugget is great from any size gator. What will ruin it to me is ANY over cooking or too much salt.

hogdogs if right..........they all seem to taste the same. It's mild white meat. Some cuts can be tough but the standard is to pound of Jaccard first so that issue is removed.

I clean fish for a living and have butchered everything from armadillos to ostritch and I can tell you, the smell of a meat is often a indication of how strong it will taste. Gator meat has no smell, less than chicken.

Yes a very sanitary meat... Only thing I think is even close is Frog meat and I like both equally.

You definitely have GOT to find another hobby! I think you're involved in something that's WAAYY over the top! D***! Have you ever had one of those oversized iguanas come back to life? And I thought those guys noodling for catfish were nutso. If that's a small one, I don't think I want to be in the boat when you catch a BIG one.

Every once in a while I see a picture of something like that and all I can think of is: God I love livin here in the Tx Panhandle where I'm still pretty much at the top of the food chain!!!

I love it when the Yankees think that being around gators is such an "exceptional" thing. I'm with the origianal poster - they're just big lizards. I can't wait until the FWC delists the gator as a protected species (last I heard, they were talking about delisting within 5 years). I wouldn't mind hunting them but I'm not willing to pay the big bucks that the current system takes.

do you need a permit to take gators?

Yes, and there are only a very limited number sold. That is why I'm excited about plans to de-list the gator as protected. When they do, they should be subject to normal hunting license fees.

One thing to remember about the proposal to delist is that so long as the crocodile is listed as endangered in Florida there will be significant resistance to it.

The regulators concern being that with liberalized hunting the chances of having crocodiles inadvertently harvested increases significantly.

And for what it is worth Florida's alligator management program is UNUSUAL in that the fees, both from hunters and egg collectors, fund that whole operation. As a tax payer I do like the idea of a government program that produces results and pays for itself...........! Not nearly enough of those around.

Holy crap that's a big boy........

I've had gator a couple of times and it was pretty tasty. I called it the best chicken I've ever had. Milder than chicken but a much better taste if that makes sense.
