Another Kel-Tec Fan!!

All of you convinced me.... I was in the market for a light concealed carry handgun with some power.... 38 special or up. I was looking at 15 oz Taurus and S&W 5-shots, but then all of you kept bragging about the Kel-Tec pistols. So I bought one.

Wow, what a little gem. For less money than the S&W lightweight, I've got 10 rounds of more powerful 9mm!!

Now, for my next purchase... I'd like to purchase handguns for my kids, my son is 8 mos. old, and others are on the way. I'm concerned that my kids won't be able to purchase any guns in 21 years!!!

I'm looking at Ruger 9mm for the boys and S&W lightweight 38 specials for the girls. Any comments?

I've had a Kel-Tec for almost two years, and its been a reliable and accurate gun.

But... and its a big but... its a very difficult gun to shoot well at anything more than 15 feet.

(I shoot a lot and I have a number of handguns; its far harder for me to shoot the Kel-Tec well than any gun I've got.)

The Kel-Tec Owners Group will tell you that getting better with your P-11 (or P-40) will make you better with other guns, and I agree, but I question whether its worth the effort. (If you haven't visited KTOG, you should: http://www.ktog.org )

This past Sunday I shot in a small (local) IDPA pistol match with my Star Firestar Plus.
A half-inch longer than the P-11, a half-inch higher, about 10 oz. heavier, but the same capacity. A very nice gun, smooth, easy to shoot, easy to carry.

When I last shot my P-11 in competition, I came in 7th of 12. This time I came in first, by a considerable margin. I haven't improved THAT much.

The P-11 is a great gun, but I can buy a Star Firestar Plus (NIB) for less. I think its a far better gun, albeit a bit heavier. Its still very concealable, and easy to carry. (Single-action only, though, and you must carry cocked and locked.)

I'll probably sell my Kel-Tec and get a second Firestar Plus... Which might not be a bad gun for your wife.

Keltecs are nice carry packages, but stock from the box aren't easy to shoot. I did all the mods recommended by the KTOG site, and the one that made the most difference was the trigger shoe. Improved the pull by about 1000%. I HIGHLY recommend it.
