Alleged intruder shot, killed in southeast Charlotte
CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a homeowner shot and killed a man who was trying to break into his house in southeast Charlotte Friday morning.
"I feared for my life, the life of my wife and the life of my mother," said a tearful Roy Parker at a news conference later in the day. Police say no charges will be filed because the homeowner was acting in self defense.
Officers originally responded to a break-in in progress on Summerlin Place off of Rea Road around 1:30 a.m. They arrived to find the wounded intruder on the patio and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police say break-in suspect Mitchell Regis attempted to enter the house through a rear window. The noise of breaking glass woke up Roy Parker, who interrupted the suspect during the break-in.
"The homeowner was armed, and he fired several shots defending himself, and the suspect was struck," said Todd Walther, homicide investigator for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Police removed a window screen from the home as evidence Friday morning. They say that is where the intruder entered the house.
Mitchell Regis, the intruder, had a criminal record. He was charged twice in 1993 with simple assault. In 1995, Regis was convicted of felony cocaine posession. He has also twice been charged with trespassing.
According to North Carolina law, a property owner has a right to defend his property, particularly if the owner is also defending himself or herself.
The district attorney will review this case to make sure that the proper amount of force was used.
