Another good newspaper photo

Remember the photo that was discussed a month or two ago of some fighter in Syria. There was another good one in today's Washington Post on page A6. It shows a "Syrian rebel" shooting at "government snipers." His technique and equipage is interesting.

His weapon is a shorter barrel AK variation, stock folded. He is shooting one handed while on the run. He is wearing a white t-shirt under some form of military load carrying vest. His baseball cap is worn stylishly with the brim to the rear and he has flip-flops on his feet, but it is summertime.

Good photo; interesting character. Would be even better if he were riding a horse.

So you're making fun of him because he is not a soldier, wearing typical civilian clothes with the only thing he feels he needs (or can a hold of) in a mag vest?

It sounds like he is running to cover while trying to suppress the enemy. Remember most of these guys fighting are not soldiers or trained. They are fighting with what they have. I'm sure he did not choose flip flops over combat boots.

It's amazing what we Americans take for granted.

Btw, the discussion in the last picture was because the guy had a M4 and used it like a pistol while looking through a rifle scope.

I'm going off of what you described as the photo, seeing the actual photo would help.

I think it is a photo that shows a fair amount of courage. My hat is off to him.

Do they "actually believe" that Allah will guide the bullet to their enemies. Not really. Most Moslems are pragmatic and believe more in their good aim than supernatural aim. I know because I have lived in predominantly Moslem countries for 7 years and had many discussions concerning belief and practicality.

Do foxholes have atheists? Of course. Do non-Moslem soldiers pray for supernatural bullet guidance? Of course. Do they "actually believe?" More than likely that belief is hope.

Would the rest of you that are criticizing the guy be sitting there setting up a bench while a sniper is taking shots at you? It's called suppressive fire. And how exactly would you know what they believe? Wonder how many Muslims some of you guys have ever actually met.

Though about the flip flops; If those were all I had, I'd honestly just go barefoot. Flip flops are not the most secure of footwear, especially when trying to run from snipers. A pair of sneakers or atleast some sandals that stay on your feet properly can't possibly be that hard to come by. Even under a siege.

I wasn't making fun of the guy, other than about the way he wore his baseball cap. Surely no one here would do such a thing. And I was not critizing him in any way, just describing the photo. Thanks for posting the photo, by the way, Mr Skadoosh.

Regarding the flip flops though, several months back, there were photos of some civil disturbance somewhere in Southeast Asia, perhaps Indonesia. There were soldiers in camo clothing mixing it up with civilians. Everyone, including the soldiers were wearing flip flops. The last photo with the street empty of people showed the pavement littered with flip flops.

Belief is hope but not everyone hopes for the same thing. Do not some football teams pray before a game? Which side do you suppose God is on?

I wear my baseball cap backwards all the time. Like when riding motorcycle or in the boat so the wind doesn't catch the bill and blow it off.......or when shooting bow or some scoped rifles....or when hunting thick brush. Sometimes I turn it backwards to protect my neck from the sun. Sometimes I do it just to irritate folks. Go ahead and make fun of me too, guess that's what makes some folk's day.

In a war ravaged world, I assume there is no dress code. If a white tee shirt and flip-flops are all one has to wear into battle or to escape the enemy, what else are they to do. If I remember correctly there were many patriots of our own Revolutionary War that wore whatever they had. Wasn't it those same men with rags tied to their feet that crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day? Maybe BlueTrain, you should open a thread and make snide comments about them also.

I see little sense in ridiculing folks under the duress of war. They aren't trying to win a fashion show or make the cover of a gun magazine with the proper shooting stance. They are just trying to survive.

So far my snide comments have been limited (in this thread) to baseball caps. Please understand that I write things here that I wouldn't say to someone face to face, same as you. But some people here I might avoid speaking to altogether, possibly based entirely and unfairly on their baseball cap, but especially if worn indoors. That could be overcome by whatever motorcycle they may have been riding.

After all, you meed the nicest people on a Honda.

I guess we're different in more ways than one. First off, I would never say anything online that I wouldn't have the balls to say face to face. I believe there is an internet term for those that do. Secondly, I would never judge or refrain from talkin' to someone based solely on the way they dress or the bike they ride. But then, after all, if I need to explain, you wouldn't understand.......;)

Really? Lets look at your original comment.

His technique and equipage is interesting.

Looks like you are making snide comments about his technique of holding an AK pistol in one hand, his gear consisting of a white t-shirt and LBV, his baseball cap and flip flops.

You are obviously trying to get people to laugh at this guy who is fighting what he feels is an oppressive government. Nobody's laughing. You don't need a uniform and combat equipment to fight a war.
