Another example of under/over reacting.

I've been unable to find credence to this report.
But here goes, letter for letter from my little corner of the world.
Oh, just for the record, it was on the last page of the paper.

Man threatened to 'shoot up' school.
Key West, Fl. (AP)--The mayor's 21-year old son was taken into custody after threatening to shootup the local high school during an argument with a bus driver, police said.
No charges were filed against Dakin Andrews Weekley, the son of Mayor Jimmy Weekley. He eventually was released and driven home by police after the incident Thursday night.
Bus driver Robert Roberts told authorities that Weekley, a community college student, had boarded the bus and refused to pay the full fare.
An argument ensued, and Weekley allededly said: "You are messing with a student, the future of our country. That's OK. I will shoot up the high school".
"It was a dumb thing for him to have done", his father said. "He made a smart-aleck remark. it was just asn argument with a bus driver."

It seems that if you just say it to a bus driver, it's just being smart-aleck. Now if you were writing a school report of the most horrible thing you can imagine, you'd be expected to spend near a week in the hoosegow!! What a crock!!

Still trying to find closer reference to this incident(in Florida). Maybe someone has this, and can enlighten us.

Best Regards,
Don
Tell me what you all think of this one.

The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms; history shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.

Personally, I say screw him. If you're not allowed to defend yourself, you should certainly be allowed to throw the book at people who threaten your life. If it was a stupid thing to do, I'm sorry, but lots of things are characterized as "just stupid things to do." I'm a little biased. Here's the story of last weekend at my dorm as I posted it at http://www.bladeforums.com :

quote:
Here's the situation: I'm an RA (resident assistant) at my college. This year they stuck me in the upperclassmen dorm (it's a hellhole) a fairly open building constructed like a cheap hotel with all the rooms opening onto walkways and a central lounge.
The three RA's on duty this weekend, two small women named Sarah and Megan and one large man named Warren, had an encounter with several little thugs Friday night and AGAIN on Saturday.
Friday night, two young men were making a lot of raucous noise at about 2:30 a.m. Quiet hours begin at 2:00 a.m., so Sarah asked them to quiet down and either leave or go to the room they were visiting, since they were obviously not residents. They shouted that they were from high school, and didn't have to follow her effing rules. She says they "threw gang signs" at her; I'm not so sure, but we're only a few hours from Chicago and the Chicago gangs have expanded much farther South than us. They also told her, apparently in a stream of ranting, that they would go home, get their guns, and come back shooting. They continued that they would later return to plant bombs in the dorm, to "blow y'all up right." They left in a hurry, still shouting threats, so she followed them far enough to get their license plates and called the police. The cops came fairly quickly and left with the plate number, but had the wrong one. By the time they got it figured out, they already had the kids in custody because the geniuses went straight from here to the town square to smash out car windows at random! Wily opponents, they were. :)
When the cops came back, they asked about the campus security guards. Of course, Monmouth College can't stand the idea of armed guards, so our security guards don't carry firearms or batons. As far as I know, they don't even have cuffs or pepper spray. According to Warren, the cops thought that was pretty stupid and indicated to him that their weapons were VERY important to them. I don't doubt it.
ANYWAY, I think we've established that these are not lads of average intelligence. Further evidence can be found in the fact that the idiots came back the next night! That's right, on Saturday, Sarah was on duty again, this time with Megan. The original thugs plus several friends came waltzing into the lounge where Sarah and Megan were hanging out at around 1 a.m. It took Sarah several minutes to realize that these were the same young thugs, and when she did she made several mistakes in a row. Instead of going outside on a pretense and calling the cops or at least security, she exclaimed "You're those same little ****s from last night!" and radio security right in front of them. The young man who had made the most threats, of course, announced his intention to leave and headed for the door. Sarah made her second mistake; she bolted for the door and tried to block him in. The kid had a head of steam up so he shoved past her and made his escape. He stopped to shout another threat from the parking lot and then all five bolted. By the time security arrived, they were gone.

Lessons learned, besides the obvious? By the obvious, I mean:

1. Security guards, at least, should be armed. Letting them walk around without even a baton is asking to have one killed--these people patrol an open campus from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. They even have to transport the night's cash from the campus coffee shop across campus, usually at around 1 a.m.! I'd like to see a lot more students armed, of course. Most of my friends know I usually have a knife or two handy. No one here knows about my handgun and I have to keep it that way; they're officially banned on campus. But I'm damn glad I have it. I wish I'd brought my shotgun with the slug barrel. The only thing that comforts me the tiniest bit is that if someone is shooting in the courtyard (the most obvious place) I will be in an elevated, covered position as soon as I exit my door. Cold comfort.

2. DON'T try to stop someone who has threatened to pull a gun from escaping, especially physically. If he wants to escape, you have won. If you've read the "overconfidence vs. knives" threads, you may recognize this girl. She's the one who was in the Marines and has great faith in her hand to hand ability.

3. DON't alert a predator that you're on to him if you have the chance to slip away without alerting him. She panicked. Hard to blame her.
I'm trying to help as best I can. She's still pretty defensive when anyone criticizes her decision to try to capture the thug--our genius of a boss told her it was effing stupid of her. I'd be mad too. Just to make the point in our meeting tonight (the first I've heard of any of this ) I reminded her that he had alluded to weapons and that she didn't know what he had concealed, then put all three of my knives on the table. Didn't shake her up the way I hoped; she seemed amused. I think we'll have to have more conversations about her hand to hand abilities. The kid may need more to get his thrill next time. I just don't want to give her some kind of false confidence (I'm NOT qualified to train anyone for a street fight) that will get her in trouble next time, but I also don't want to leave her defenseless. I'm just rambling now so I'm going to close this and go to bed. Thanks to everyone who read this far.[/quote]

If she was in the Marines then she should know that H2H sucks and you avoid it if at all possible. Monmouth, huh? I'm up in Chicago, and these annoying gang-bangers sound pretty much like everyday trash from here abouts. Semper Fi...Ken
