another custom rifle project... trying to keep my retired buddy busy

:) my buddy had been collecting parts, but wasn't sure he really wanted to shoot a .416... so to round up some spending money for him, nets me a new custom rifle project

looking at doing a 416 Rigby on a P-14 action

just starting the research... can easily get a chamber reamer, have the action & a custom box magazine that's long enough, have the barrel, & 2 different bullet molds for gas checked bullets, & have the gas checks & have a loading die set

the action is one he's had a while & done some "smoothing" of it's outside lines... looking at doing a single stack magazine that will hold 2 or 3 rounds depending on the stock style chosen...

anyone ever do a project like this ??? got any sugestions ??? was thinking about a cock on open conversion, an adjustable trigger, & maybe a laminated stock... maybe Richards micro fit ???

he thinks he can contour the reciver to take a Remington long action one piece scope base...

once completed, it'll fit in nicely with my 338 Winmag & 375 H&H Brownings

Sounds like a cool rifle, I've got a 1917 action that has been made into a .300 H&H. I've been looking for a P14 to build as a .30-40 Krag, possibly the AI version. Sounds like a good build and a strong action to build a .416 Rigby on.

thought I'd give an update... project is coming together quite nicely

new magazine box ( longer ) has already been fabricated, the reciever has been machined to fit the longer & wider magazine box, a Douglas barrel has been chambered & contoured ( pretty heavy contour, & 24" long right now ) new Richards Micro Fit brown laminated stock is here ( had to order what they had in stock to speed things up... got the deep magazine stock, but had to accept a beaver tail front end, which will be reshaped as narrow as needed to still give a good amount of wood around the big barrel & still fit the hand for off hand shooting ) a new adjustable trigger with a speed lock ( cock on open ) adaptor is here... a Remington long action scope base is here & the top of the reciever now being shaped to fit the one piece base... several mods being made to the reciever, & the bolt is being straightened to both move it forward & to give me more leverage for the big old cartridges... so far, with out a scope the parts weigh just over 10 lbs... may hit 11 with the scope... don't want it too light for a bruiser like the .416 Rigby

looking like this will be a shooter by spring... just need to decide if do a traditional blueing, or if I do a Dura Coat ???

BTW... found some load recipes using Trailboss at about 50% of normal velocities & pressures... should be OK for 1st trials & work up loads from there
