Another Clueless Anti!!

Had a very interesting discussion last night with a rather religious anti. She was absolutely horrified to learn that I was a gun owner, and the conversation almost ended there. I was able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat (sort of). She was about as anti as you can get, considering guns to be a source of evil, cause of crime, should be restricted, banned, nobody should have them (not even cops!) etc, etc. She wanted to know why you couldn't just take a karate class, carry pepper spray or even a knife for defense? (She couldn't explain how killing someone in self defense with a knife was better than using a gun). This 23 yr old 5'2" woman actually thinks that she can physically defend herself in any situation while unarmed against a 280lb 6'2" felon intent on raping or killing her. She believes this because she took a self defense class, and was able to "take down" 6' "bad guys" in the class. Once I explained to her that these "bad guys" had absolutely no intention of hurting her for real, and in fact probably allowing themselves to be taken down, she fell back on the "grace of God will save me". Sheesh!! What about all the other victims??

Before talking to me she basically believed that if you are a gun owner, you are a fanatic, prejudiced, uneducated, violent, red-necked, militia member, racist... etc, etc, the list goes on. I politely asked where she got these ideas from--was she vicitmized?, had she ever studied the facts?, did know any gun owners?, did she watch the evening news?. The answers were "No, no, no and yes". Hmmm... go figure.

All those pejorative opinions. All of us already judged and despised (this from a "Christian" person!!) without even so much as a clue on the entire subject, or a fair say.

This is what we are up against.

Despite the fact that some of these people are absolutely incapable of having or understanding a rational thought, all is not lost.

I explained to her that all the pejorative terms applied to gunowners are done so with prejudice and ignorance, and are a rather severe form of social persecution. Her response:
"This is very true and I have never seen it in this light. My apologies. I know that I have been tainted by mass media and have not given this a considerable amt of thought as to whether or not this is a valid perception. That is food to chew on for awhile. Thanks!!"

Also, regarding guns as evil:
"I have been thinking about that gun thing . . . I know logically that the gun itself is not dangerous, only the person "behind the wheel." I don't know . . . I think that I am heavily influenced by media and the protrayl that the gun itself is "evil" not the person.
So I must deduct this reasoning logically and
thoroughly in order to come to a sound decision on my stance with this issue."

That is about as good a concession as you can get from set-in-stone anti.

Maybe all is not lost!!

Good job. You're lucky you came across a "thinker", and she will think about it.

Hey, I know her! No wait, I'm thinking of another anti... At least you're in the right state if you're looking to do this kind of missionary work. Sounds like you have enough patience. Good work!

I'm planning on attempting a conversion on one of my wife's friends when I get a chance. It'll be an expirement in debate and persuasiveness. My wife used to be against guns, but now she counters the arguments if we're out with other people! She's not all that interested in shooting, but at least she respects the rights.

I thought maybe you had met my mom for a minute until I saw she was 23 :D. Funny how some people can only see one side of things and not even bother to TRY to understand the other side. I go through this at least twice a week with someone in my family. All we can do is keep educating little by little. You did a good job!

Now where is Jim V with that clue bat? :D

Hoppy,

I can live with people not being into shooting... as long as they respect our rights, which is hard to come by.

The trick is to give some acceptance or empathy to the other person's feelings, remain calm and patient, never let anger color your argument. Was it Thomas Jefferson that said, "If angry, count to ten before speaking. If very angery, a hundred". Words to remember when dealing with antis.

I was also lucky: she has a brain, and was inclined to use it.

DZ,
I agree that is an excellent article... but I don't think she is quite ready for that. Patince and persistance first. When the time is right, I will help her to see the truth.

Masshooter,

Thanks for the advice. I'll need it. and I'll post results if I get the chance to improve her outlook.

Is it a sign of frustration if I'm seriously considering taking down the next woman who tells me she'll use karate on an attacker? Nothing damaging--just a quick entry, flank, and grapple her down as gently as I can.

OK, I've had 2 seconds to think about this and realized how stupid it was. Tempting, yes. But not worth permanently closing someone's mind.

Don I feel your pain. have had the same frusttrations. as a side note, I have seen some of those tough man compititions and the karate guys don't do all that well. karate is better than nothing but a 357 beats karate anytime.

A little off the subject, but:
If her self defense instructor told her to do anything other than to run like hell when confronted by an opponent either bigger than herself or armed, he did her a great disservice and was, no doubt, a fraud.

Don, I took self defense in high school and the main thing we were told was "Your body is your best weapon" I can see where these women are getting it from, but when you beat on that guy with all the padding on, he is not using any force. They don't seem to realize that the BG is going to use all his force. We were told to 'claw' the perp in the eyes and yell "NO!" Ok great.....if someone is around to hear it. I was in a 'situation' once and when I tried the kicking technique my leg was grabbed and I was flipped to the ground. If women/anti's really think Karate/Self defense is going to work in every situation, then I feel real sorry for them. My Mom says the same thing, she would rather kick the .... out of someone than shoot him. Well my mom is 5'3 and 56 years old.....ain't gonna happen. People tend to talk but when faced in a situation things are much different.

(sorry didn't mean to get off the subject too much masshooter)
