Another CCW pistol question?

I'm shopping for a small frame/large caliber pistol.
I've seen some dissapointing muzzle energy numbers for the 45ACP in the ~3.5" barrel crowd. Does it really take a 5" barrel like a 1911 to get the 45ACP round up to speed? If I'm to accept a shorter barrel such as this the 40S&W seems to get up to speed a lot quicker and the rounds take up less space to boot!
So I guess I'm looking for opinions for a small 40S&W conceal pistol. I've been looking at the Glock G27, so I would like any opinions on this particular pistol too. I've done searches on the above topics but failed to find anything that adquately answers my questions. Is there a URL pointing to existing data on the short barrel/light round debate?
Thanks for any help!

I have three Glocks Glock Model 17, 22 and 27... My G-27 (Glock mobel 27) is my CCW weapon.. I love it... I have the Pearce Plus one gripe Ext.. And a Hogue robber gripe..Fits my hand perfect and Concealment is no problem in my Sidearmor IWB Holster. Its a nice little gun you will love it..........

Okay thanks!
I was leaning toward the G30, but it seems to take a longer barrel to get the 45ACP cranked up, plus it's bulky when compared to the G27. So my study goes on!

TF...

Hey, I live in Kentucky also. I've had my Glock 27 for over three years. In all that time, I've never had a problem of any type. Like ".40 G27", I also have one mag with a non-plus one Pearce extension. (Just a little place to put my pinky during practice. It's been a wonderful pistol. I also have Trijicon night sights. Lately, I've began to wonder if I need those things at all. When they go out, I don't think I'll replace them. The G30 is a fine choice, however it's about the same size as a .40 cal G23. I like Federal "PD" Hydra-Shoks. Soft recoil and it makes a big hole.
Good luck in your choice. With a Glock you really can't make a mistake. :)

If you want to get some idea as to the velocity of various rounds out of different lengths of barrels, find a copy of the March 2001 Shooting Times. They go over a variety of defensive ammo and chrono them out of 3" - 6" barrels. In some cases, they were able to get comparable speeds between commander length and full size (5") barrels. It just depends on the load, powder burn, and gun. Based on what I gathered from that article, most .45 defensive ammo is really geared to being fired out of guns with barrels 4-5" long. When you get below 4" velocity takes an more noticeable drop. If you go beyond 5", velocity may increase, but not signficantly enough to warrant the extra barrel lenght.

The Glock 27 is an excellent choice for a concealed carry pistol. I carried one for three years before moving up in calibers to the .45. I was comfortable with the pistol and it was extremely accurate.

If you want some velocity figures on the G30, try over at GT. They have some good chronograph information on the G30 as well as other caliber/weapon combinations in the "Caliber Corner" section.

I wouldn't worry about too much velocity loss in the G30. It only loses 50fps or so with 230gr JHP's when compared to the full size mod 21. There are even a few folks out there who use this weapon for a duty pistol.

GREAT!
Thanks guys for all the replies!
My dealer has a G26 and I think it should be about the same size as the G27. I don't think I'll get the night sights, as they are about $100 I can put some luminous paint on with a toothpick!:D
Okay rifleman about being in KY. I'm between Etown, and Owensboro. So no go on the rent them all and decide! I don't think they do that up in Louisville. I kinda like the KelTec P40 but the trigger was terrible, and the finish wasn't very good, I know you don't shoot the finish but it looked kinda dinky. I'll have try and find that magazine on the barrel lengths.
Thanks to all!
