another 1911 question

In my search for the best price for a Kimber Custom Target I came across the Dan Wesson PM1 and PM2. Both are in the price range I had in mind. I’ve heard Kimber owners complain about the mags., but not much else. I’d be buying additional clips and could go with a different brand so that isn’t much of a factor. This would not be a carry piece. Primarily used as a range gun and home defense so I would prefer the adjustable rear sight of the Kimber Target or the PM1. All I really need to know is, should I be considering one of these over the other, and for what reason?

Thanks,
Rupe

I have heard so-so things about the Dan Wessons.

I have heard both bad and good about Kimbers.

I would recommend a Colt. Get the Lew Horton model with adjustable sights or get a new Government model and have the sights put on. Great guns nowadays from what I have heard and seen.

Both are 1911 oriented forums and you can glean tons of info there.

Kimber's QC tends to be a lot better on guns labeled "Custom" than on the others (although they're by no means "custom guns").

I'd buy the Kimber Custom Target over the Dan Wesson; the jury still seems to be out on the DW's.

It is my understanding that Dan Wesson uses castings made by Essex. My experience with Essex parts has been very mixed. Essex can make good castings, but many are out of specifications or suffer from porosity.

Definitely Kimber, however I suggest the baseline model. The Kimber adjustable sight has a reputation for fragility, and although Bo-Mar makes a good replacement you're still talking about extra $$$ just to fix a new gun. Get the fixed sight model, then later if you want adjustables you can have a gunsmith mill the slide and install Bo-Mars and do it right the first time.

You are right though, the Kimber and most other brands of 1911s often come with crappy magazines. Buy a few Wilson, Metalform, or Ed Brown magazines. I know some folks gripe about spending $30 for a Wilson mag, but you know what? The factory mags for a Glock, SIG, or Beretta will also cost the same amount. That is what you'll need to spend if you want to have a decent magazine. The $15 1911 mags are that price for a reason.

Buy the Kimber!

I was also looking for a Pointman. I wanted a full size pistol that I could carry and use for IPSC and pins. I went to the listed dealer from DW's web page. The guy had never even seen one!
When I asked if he could get a couple in to let me see them, he called the dist. They told him that they DROPPED the line!!!!!!
No explanation. Another influencing factor was I e-mailed them,
and didn't hear back untill I sent another e-mail w/ a little more "feeling". The moral of the story is : I bought the Kimber Custom Stainless Target II. I don't regret this at all !!!!!!!!!
I took it out yesterday. I was shooting Magtec 230gr hardball. Pretty much the cheapest ammo you can get. The end result is: after I got her sighted in, I shot 2 - 5 rnd. groups from the bench @ 25 yds. The first measured 1.42" and the second .88". Un-friggin-believable!!!:D

Sorry to ramble on, I'd just like to see you as happy as I am.

Bob
