SPRINGFIELD, Ill., March 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
In a classic example of Chicago-style political trickery, Rep. Lauren Beth Gash (D-Highland Park) today killed an effort to take hundreds of guns off of Illinois streets.
Earlier this month, SB1571 passed the Illinois Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support. Introduced by Sen. Ed Petka
(R-Plainfield), SB1571 sought to eliminate a loophole in the Municipal Code that allows untrained, unqualified mayors, aldermen,
and other city politicians to carry concealed handguns in public.
Having passed the Senate, SB1571 moved to the House Judiciary Committee II for consideration. Gash, who chairs that committee, tacked a last-minute amendment
on to SB1571 that doomed it to failure.
Gash's amendment revived a highly unpopular plan to harshly punish hunters and sportsmen who may inadvertently transport lawfully owned firearms in an improper manner.
This extremist proposal further jeopardized SB1571 by causing the bill to violate the constitutionally mandated single subject rule.
As a result, Gash's action forced the sponsor to withdraw the bill from consideration.
"Today, we saw Rep. Gash put political cronyism ahead of public safety," said ISRA president Richard Pearson. "Rep. Gash has always claimed to be a champion of gun control.
Now we see that Gash's concept of gun control is to assail the rights of the law-abiding citizen, while guaranteeing dangerous perks to her political pals.
"The heaviest pressure against passage of SB1571 came from the City of Chicago's paid lobbyists," continued Pearson. "Clearly, the
main beneficiaries of the demise of SB1571 are Chicago aldermen.
Thus, Gash has shown her allegiance to be with the Chicago political machine, and not with the Illinois families who must share their churches, shopping malls and streets with these armed, but dangerously unqualified politicians."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearm ownership. For nearly a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of more than 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
