Anger, and thyroid conditions

This subject came up in another thread, with MusclesMcGee. That thread is understandably locked, but I do want to mention this ... it might help someone.

While not a real common condition, it is also not uncommon for men and women to have thyroid problems. If you have a quick temper, rapid metabolism / weight loss, and seem to have a high body heat, you could have a thyroid condition.

The thyroid has a great deal of impact on how you feel - emotions, metabolism, weight gain / loss, memory, speech, muscles and vision.

Saw a fellow one time who had received 2 or 3 speeding tickets in as many days, combative, etc. He was hyper-thyroid. His doctor actually testified for him in court regarding his mental / physical state.

So, this is of little interest to most folks, but no kidding ... if you're hot-tempered, and especially if it seems to be getting worse or out of character (sometimes so gradual, hard to know that), then get a physical. This is an odd physical quirk that many don't know about. It can be successfully treated.

Conversely, if you're always dragging, have memory and vision problems, etc., then you might be 'hypo-thyroid' - the reverse condition.

I know this isn't a medical discussion group, but tempers and attitudes have definite self defense / CCW implications, IMHO.

Jeff, dont sweat it. That situation is wrapped up.

But thanks for the bio lesson. Next time I get the urge to choke someone out for violation of my Felony Stupid statute - I can blaim my thyroid gland.

:D

Um, yeah and sometimes it's just a bit too much party. That little 'ol Thyroid don't give out much party beverages.

Interesting this topic should come up, as I had several symptoms.. weight loss, hyper-active, always frustrated and argued about anything. Daughter (now fourth year med school) and wife insisted I go for some blood tests. Guess what? Thyroxin was pumping out at 45 units (which units?) when the normal is about 25-30 (acceptable range 20-40), so my whole metabolism was in Overdrive.
That was about 9 months ago. Treatment involved ingestion of Radio-active Iodine (attracted to the Thyroid gland), which "zapped" it , so now I must take tablet each dayto input thyroxin to my system. The endocrynologist is still playing with the dosage to get me spinning on all eight, but I certainly feel a lot more level- and clear- headed and am sleeping better.
Funny, but still cant break as many clays as before! My age; 56 years. Occupation: Professional Engineer. Interestingly, it's and "auto-immune" condition. i.e. you can't "catch it" it just happens! May be stress, or fatigue-related.
This is a great site. Keep up the good work promoting Shooting.

Wish they could bottle the weight loss part of the symptom - I could loose about 15 -20 pounds...
I may be a bit over - but I can still pass the Army PT test with a 10.30 2 mile run and bench press 100 + body weight...
Sumthin Mongo the Wonder Tongan didnt figure on... :D

Anyways - whats this gotta do with guns?
I think I'll lock this - Jeff - as I said dont worry about it.
