and Danforth spaketh

Former Senator John Danforth, the latest government annointed "investigator" in l'affaire Waco today offered the following. Essentially the only people to blame were The Davidians. Additionally, there was NO GOVERNMENT COVERUP. If you thought you might have heard sardonic laughter in the background Virginia, you did.

He also stated that he wanted the government "to learn from Waco". I'm sure that they have learned from Waco, though what they likely learned is indeed troubleing, as it amounts to the following.

They learned that they can lie, they can remove/destroy material evidence, they can "stonewall", they can phoney up search and arrest warrants, they can kill with impunity. These are the things that "the government" has learned.

What might possibly remain to be seen is the following: Re what happens at the sharp end of the stick, against whom will this newly acquired knowledge be used? Based on past performances, one hesitates to speculate, however there are some very obvious conclusions that could be drawn. None of them bode well for the individual, and his/her/their civil rights.

Did you expect anything else? The Congress was fed only what Janet "Burn 'em out" Reno wanted them to see. Just enough to show some inconsistency, just enough to confuse, just enough to shift theblame on the Davidians.

For the record, I believe that David Koresh (sp?) should take some of the blame. He could have controled the issue after the initial assualt by the feds. I blame the feds most of all. The ATF wanted a grand stand "Holy Sh*t" issue to show Congress in the budget hearings. It is too bad they decided on hitting the Davidians, instead of a large drug cartel or a terrorist group. I also wonder if the fact that the Davidians were/are a fundamentalist sect of Christianity had anything to with the target selection?

Realistically speaking, I didn't expect much more than was produced, and expensive fob-off. One might have hoped, but what one really expected, that is something else.

By the way, take another look at my post, and note the phrase describing Danforth as the latest government annointed "investigator".

It really is a shame, for The Congress always had the power to really look at what happened and who was responsible. They also had the power to take serious corrective, badly needed action. Unfortunately, they choose to do otherwise, leaving the nation much the worse for their failure. It really is a damned shame.

I am not disapointed as this is exactly what I expected. Please the masses, feed them Sh** and keep them in the dark and they love it.What they don't know doesn't hurt them.

Fmr. Sen. Danforth certainly did not want to end up like that fellow who had the evidence to prove a cover up!!!!!
Probably got a phone call. Three words:"Remember Vince Foster".

As near as I can figure, Danforth ignores the question of whether the government was justified in the first place in wielding military and paramilitary forces against civilians. He also seems to ignore the escalation that took place at Waco simply because of the government's use of excessive force there. Maybe it wasn't his job to pronounce on these things, but if he was interested in democracy he should have made it his job.

In my personal opinion, Reno and Koresh are about equally responsible for the deaths at Waco. But because of the vast forces at her command, Reno was and is a potentially vastly greater threat to the country than Koresh ever was. Exonerating her and her troopers only worsens the danger. Is Danforth blind to this?

IOW, Danforth was supposed to find a solution, but it appears that he's part of the problem. Certainly I haven't heard anything from him that would convince me that Reno and company are innocent of gross abuse of power.

Our recourse is to vote Gore out of office in November. When Gore is dismissed from Washington, Reno will have to pack up and leave with him. Good riddance!

My two cents.

BTW, my wife and I are usually pretty close on political issues. But her aversion to Koresh is so strong that she believes Reno was justified. I respect her opinion, and in any case I've given up trying to convince her that whatever Koresh may have been or done, Reno's reaction was no less atrocious and much more dangerous. But a lot of people--and the media--seem to see Waco as my wife does.

What a relief! I was sooooo concerned we'd find out that the Davidians DIDN'T have it coming to them.

I saw the liar Danforth doing a news conference on the tube last night, it was blatantly obviuos he was lying what with the involuntary facial and body twitches during the questions..henry

If I recall correctly, Danforth's #2 man on that project was the (assistant?) US Attorney from MO who very actively opposed the CCW initiative there some time back. I doubt there was much objectivity there on the first day or work.

Bob:

If you are right in what you remember, along with Danforth's earlier comments, back at the beginning of his "investigation", objectivity never had as much of a chance as does the proverbial "snow ball in hell".

World Net Daily has something about Danforth being on GWB's list as possible VP. We are truly doomed people, we're just too stubborn to admit it!

Danforth is not going to be VP for GWB. I think he's democrat. Doesn't matter who investigated, Clinton's group has so much on any of the established "career" politicians that the truth won't come out. Elector, see if you can find a copy of the film HBO ran on the anniversary of Waco in April. Show that to your wife and I guarantee, she will change her mind. My wife and I watched it and it made us so proud to be Americans we wanted to puke. There is no doubt in our minds this was Murder, plain and simple!

Danforth is Republican. He was appointed by Reno in order to quiet criticism (of government self-investigational bias).

Who knows what happened. I do know this, the ATF initiated the confrontation and it went wrong. A strong message was to be sent to "out of the mainstream" groups. The message was clearly sent, but it was also clearly mismanaged. The whole thing went wrong - right from the beginning. As long as this group was leaving the government and the people of Texas alone, the Feds should have minded their own business. I'm Libertarian and I suggest that you continue to grow government and eventually the government will regulate your bowel movements. Something that Gore may already be very good at.. judging by his stiff demeanor.

When the Waco mess first started, the TV news showed government law enforcement personnel firing fast and furious at/into the Davidians' building.

Now Danforth says the government didn't shoot at the Davidians?

Amazing!

Freinds have asked me about this ruling. I've pretty much shocked them by saying that I expect a violent reaction. (not a massive uprising, but I do see reprisals like OK city.) Does anyone disagree with this possibility.
BTW, I'm saddened by the rulings on this case. I'll also be saddened when/if something happens.
