I'm looking to mount a scope on my SKS and don't like the dust cover mounts and don't want to drill and tap a Russian like that. Millet makes a scope mount as seen below that mounts the scope "scout" style in front of the bolt. For this cartridge and rifle that would seem to be an ideal setup. A low powered scope that you can use and still keep your eyes on your target.

Has anyone used this mount? How solid is it?

Also, I have been looking for a scope for it. I really like the Leupold LER Scout 2.75X, but it is $240 or so and I can't bring myself to put such a scope on an SKS, even though it is a fine example of an SKS.

I'm looking at the Tasco World Class 1.5-4X Pistol Scope for $89. Has anybody used one of these? Impressions of Tasco products overall?

Can't comment on the mount.

However, my experience with $90 scopes (especially zoom scopes) has been less than favorable. They may or may not be sharp enough and robust enough (generally not) but they will be guaranteed to flare badly. Any light source close to the target or behind the shooter would case the image to wash out and be unusable.

I don't particularly want a reddot on it. I have been perusing Ebay, Gunbroker, and Auction Arms and have run across several scopes at good prices. What do you think about a used Burris or Leupold? They are good scopes and the warranty is supposed to be good.

Will a pistol scope be okay? Or do I need to use a "scout" scope? What magnifications should I go with? Variable or fixed?

B-Square?

I put a B-Square (Weaver) mount on mine (At least I think it's a B-Square. It was a long time ago when I put it on.). It clamps onto the front portion of the gas tube and extends over the top of the handguard (cantilever). I have a Leupold M8 on it. The ocular is about 17-17.5 inches away (about where the adjustment turrets are in your pic). Since I got a new digital camera, I'll try to get pics posted.

How well does it hold its zero? That would seem to be a weak place to mount a scope as I can move the tube slightly with my hand.

sks scope mount

That's an interesting scope mount, but It doesn't look very solid.
I've been trying to mount a scope on mine for years. I built one that is rock solid by welding side plates onto a spare reciever cover, then welding a scope rail to the top of it. Then I drilled and tapped holes for set screws in the side plates to grip the sides of the reciever. It is really rock solid, but then I faced the dilema of finding a reasonably priced scope to put on it. I put a Norinco 3x-9x on it, but found out the recoil of the rifle bounces the reticle around and won't hold zero. I'm not willing to put a 400 dollar scope on a 100 dollar rifle (hence the name Cheapshot). Ultimately, I gave up on it and just use the iron sights. My rifle shoots well enough for what it is. I can honestly say that it shoots 3-4 inch groups at 100 yds with open sights and surplus ammo (much worse with the scope on it). So if I did put an expensive scope on it, it might shoot even better, but I'd rather spend the money towards a nicer rifle.

The mount holds its zero pretty well on my SKS (at least as well as the the rifle groups). The gas tube on my rifle, however, is very tight. I've seen pretty loose tubes on other SKSs and it was a concern I had in the beginning but mine is still pretty tight and has held up very well.

Still working on the pic. Can't seem to extract the photo from the camera with the program I'm using.

OK. Hope this works. First time I used Photopoint. Sorry for the low lighting in the photo.

There is also a channel under the mount so that you can use the iron sights if you want or need to.

The Millet mount seems to work fine on the Russian guns.
I have not tried it on any Chinese weapons.

The Tasco Pro Point is a decent red dot that holds zero well on low recoiling weapons like SKS and ARs.
Cheap too, at about $90.00

If you buy a used Leupold, and it is damaged in any way, won't hold zero, or whatever, send it back to Leupold. They have absolutely marvelous service. They generally repair or replace for no charge.

Burris scopes suck. They break at the drop of a hat, and the optics are only so so.
Tasco's scopes are slightly better, but I do not entirely trust them.

Someone posted that USA Magazines are part of a gov't conspiracy to screw us up. I think TASCO is part of it too. NEVER had a Tasco scope or rings I was happy with.

both mounts look like a better option than the top cover mounts

i've had some good luck with tasco world class scopes on my armalite m15 and stg-58

you might want to look at the B&L 1.75x4 turkey scope with the circle recticle. i just got one and i'm trying to decide wheather to put it on a ar15 or ak74
