An enlisted man's view of Schofield

Here's an enlisted man's observations of George Schofield.

Major [George W.] Schofield of the 10th Cavalry was a perfect gentleman, but the penny was his god. At one payday while I was orderly for him, I had the pleasure to walk about ten or fifteen times to the different offices, all for thirty-five cents [extra pay]. As major of the fort he had nothing at all to do so he passed his time by experimenting in the improvement on pistols of which he had an interest. [Schofield perfected the automatic ejector for the Smith & Wesson .45 caliber pistol]. Once while at Caddo this same major engaged a negro woman for his servant, brought her up to [Fort] Sill on government transportation and, it was said, made her work for two months free for her fare.

Cheap b******d probably didn't even reimburse the gubmint either.:p

IIRC, he developed the idea on government time, used his official position to get S&W to make the guns and pay him on a royality basis, then used his Army clout to get a government contract.

Looking at the news today, one could easily believe in reincarnation.

Jim

I understand that the government royalty thing didn't work out and he shot himself with one of his pistols.
