An engraving question...

OK, suppose I bought a couple of matching "bird's head" grip Vaquero's in .32 H&R mag and they both had the "mottled" case-hardened look. Now, suppose I wanted initials and the date engraved somewhere on the side. Do you think this could be done by someone who wouldn't mess up the looks of these great six-shooters? I wonder if Ruger could do it at the factory? You see, the wife has been dropping LOTS of hints and I've kinda fallen in love with them too.

Sumpin else to think about...
Unless the name is really really famous...
Any resale value just went down the terlit.

Or you gonna keep em and pass em down...
Then, who cares bout value..

Talk to a good jewler. (Not the kind at the mall, but a local small business.) Many of them are either skilled engravers themselves, or will make a good reccomendation. My jewler actually makes a LOT of side money engraving firearms.

Hlmcfa: I like the good jeweler idea. Thanks!

Sam: I don't give a S*** about resale. I just want to make the old lady happy. To tell you the truth, I'm kinda worried about my collection. I don't want to sell it. When my time comes, I want to give it to somebody who will APPRECIATE what it is and ENJOY shooting these things. I don't have any kids and ~I can't believe I'm saying THIS~, but I'm the youngest member of my family who shoots. Damn, that one almost stuck in my throat! You know what I'm trying to say? I want my guns to go to a good home. Maybe I'm nuts, but that's how I feel.
Let me give you an example. I have a friend who died of cancer. He had this great sheath knife he took off a Nazi Colonel at the end of the war. It has a beautiful "stag" handle.
He had no children either, so he gave it to his nephew. After about an hour he came out and found the little dumbass THROWING the knife at a TREE!!! He just went over and, without saying a word, picked up the knife and brought it to me. His feelngs were hurt. I gave the knife a place of honor in my den.
It's a VERY nice knife and war trophy.

KR, I sincerely hope the need will never come, but I will be happy to give your collection a loving home. ;)

Seriously, I can relate (sort of.) I have two girls, and doubt they will ever show an interest in firearms. I'm gonna keep working on the older one, she's a bit of a tom-boy, and if I can ever sneak her away from her mother and teach her to shoot I think she'll love it. (Mom doesn't think that shooting is "lady-like".) :p

Later,

hlmcfa is right.

find an old family-owned store that does engraving. You might get lucky and even find one that does hand engraving--lost art, sad to say.

When I was in the business, we did this all the time. Retirement, anniversary, birthdays , graduation, xmas. Some of the 'kids' are grown, some even have lost the dads since...sentimental value extremly high.

If you don't mind going to Duck River, TN there's a gunsmith named Ron Ehlert who does excellant engraving. He works on a lot of blackpowder guns (specializes in late jaegers) but engraves like a demon.

Gary...

I don't mind going to Duck River. I'll find a little airport or grass strip close by, and be there in 30 minutes. But first, I've gotta buy the revolvers. They sure LOOK nice, but I've read some "not so great" posts regarding Vaqueros.

I'll look up Ron's email & snail mail addy for you and repost. I've had some restoration work done by him and darn if I'm not going to use him again.

KR, I don't have any Ruger firearms myself, so if you ever consider giving away your collection to a good home, I will make sure your babies have lots of friends to keep them company. Keep me in mind.

Well hell, Jeff!!!

You're "nearly" as old as me!
When the time does come (years away, I hope!), the little collection WILL probably go to some young deserving person on this board. (They'll just show up at his/her door one day.)
I reckon this is just one more thing that demonstrate's that I'm a little nuts. (Wanting my firearms to go to a good home, sheesh! However, I can't help it. That's the way I feel.) See? This is what happen's to you when you have no kids. (Sometimes, it's a little depressing.)
