AMT Backup .380

I found a newspaper ad for an AMT Backup II in .380, stainless steel, "with accessories" for $180. I've seen this gun in magazines but never handled one; I thought it might be a good purse gun for my wife. Anyone owned/used one, can you advise on its performance and whether it's a good buy at this price?

Try the search feature at this site and you will discover nothing but negative experiences associated with AMT. I never posted my own negative experience because there were already so many negative posts I didn't see the point.

AMT changed hands recently and we can hope that the new owner improves their products.

David, If you love your wife, please do NOT entrust her life to any AMT product. I bought one new because I have this "thing" for stainless, and AMT was the only company that made the model I was interested in. I may have fired 100 rounds through the gun before I finally traded it for a S&W revolver. It went back to the factory X2 and stayed there for over one year. It jammed, it misfired, it failed to feed. At the end, you pulled the trigger and waited to see if it went bang. It is the ONLY gun I have not regretted selling/trading. And yes, I told the trader about the gun - he wanted out of the S&W model 17 and thought the stainless pistol looked cool. Get your wife a PPK stainless - now there's a gun....Good luck.

I had an early AMT Backup. It functioned OK, but wasn't very accurate. The guy I sold it to told me the extractor broke later.

I replaced the AMT with a S&W mod 60.
I would suggest something similar for your wife. Something she can point and squeeze without having to bother with any safeties because unless she is extremely familiar with the gun, she won't remember the safety in a high stress situation.

my two cents.

Ok, guys, you convinced me. I'm going to give the AMT a pass-by. Maybe I'll slice another $100 or so out of the next paycheck and go back to the dealer that had a Kel-Tec P11 and a Taurus Millennium 9mm, both for about $300. Or maybe I'll just let her shop -- last time she was in the gun store with me she pointed at a Kahr K40 and said "That one's kind of cute."

CUTE?

I'm glad she didn't see that Special Edition Taurus PT92 chrome with gold trim and rosewood grips. I don't have the pimp wardrobe to go with it.
