AMT backup 380? or 9mm

I have a AMT backup, and I have had this gun for 5 years and never noticed on the side of the slide action it says "Cal. 380 9mm Kurz". I have been using 380 ammo but I am curious if it will also shoot 9mm. It's a simple little gun and easy to conceal. Does anybody have any info on this pistol?

Thanks for your responses

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You cannot shoot 9x19 ammo in your AMT. 9mm Kurz is 9x17mm, 9mm luger or parabellum is 9x19. Stick with the ammo that was inteded to be fired through it; .380 acp.

The .380 Backup was made in 2 types of guns. A single action trigger like a mini wannabe 1911 and a DAO only...no hammer, you just pull the trigger. The backup line is either loved or hated by most. I shot a very very nice DAO 380 Backup...I would carry this gun. Great trigger and very accurate for its size. It seems the guns go either way for quality. You either get a nice one or NOT.

.380 AND 9mm!

.380 is a 9mm but it's not THE 9mm. (nominal .380 = 9mm) Kurz is German for Short and it has the same type relationship to a 9mm as a .22 Short has to a .22 Long Rifle (the round most people mean when they talk about a "twenty-two". As mlk18 said the .380 (9mm Kurz) is a 9mm (diameter) X 17mm (length) round vs. the 9mm Parabellum (AKA 9mm Luger) which is 9 X 19.

Physically, the 9mm Para is too long to fit into a .380 gun/magazine. Probably a good thing since .380's aren't designed for the power of the Parabellum.

9mm Para/Luger and 9mm Kurz/Short/380 are actually .355" in diameter.....The term ".380 ACP" comes from the .38 special caliber of years gone by. Which is actually .357" in diameter. Confused yet? Shoot well

AMT 380

I have been carrying the old S/A AMT 380 for more than 25 years. I recently had it finished in Tuff-Gun, a moly coating. I carry it in an Ahern pocket holster loaded with RBCD (www.rbcd.net) ammo and it is certainly the equal of most 38 SP and (mm with regular HP's and it is very easy for pocket carry. Even though the mfg. is gone parts are available from GunParts and there are plenty of magazines at the Louisiana area gun shows.

The surprising thing is that it is quite accurate, but it is not a 1911 wannabe, the action and operation are substantially different than the Browning design of the 1911.:p

AMT should have stuck to making the original .380 backups...

The only fowl things I've heard (and said) about AMT's have been the 9mm & up. The .380's all seem to work just fine, and their owners are generally quite attached to them.

I bought a single action Back Up about 20 years ago after seeing a friends gun. It was the worst POS I have ever had! It would fail to feed at least 3 times for every magazine put through it, if not on every shot.

My friends Back Up was great, worked every time!

The "mini wannabe 1911" comment wasnt meant as a realistic comparison to the 1911 gun. Nor as a slam to AMT for the 1911 comparison :D Just kidding 1911 Followers
