AMT Automag in .17 HMR

Has anyone heard about .17 HMR replacement barrels for the AMT Automag II? After reading the article in American Rifleman on the .17 HMR, particularly the part concerning how few things Marlin and Ruger had to change to accomodate this peppy little cartridge, I got to figuring that all you would need is a different barrel and maybe a heavier recoil spring to turn the Automag II into a Automag XVII. Slide, mag and everything else could stay the same a'la Glock .40 to .357 Sig conversions.

Anyone have any thoughts? Maybe heard some rumors or have some contacts on which to drop some ideas? Sx

(I would have allready searched to make sure that I didn't miss this discussion, but the search engine ruled out HMR and AMT as too small a word)

Well, AMT is no longer with us. The latest incarnation, Galena Industries, closed down recently. The Automag series is not popular enough for there to be a big aftermarket business. There are dealers in surplus parts, but no one is making, say, 7.62x25 barrels for Automag III's, or .17 barrels for II's.

I wonder how effective the short barrel would be for the high velocity round? Of course, one could say the same for .30 carbine in a handgun (like my Blackhawk and Automag III).

What search engine did you use? google.com takes AMT and HMR just fine.

Actually this was using the TFL Search Engine. Whenever I tried it said that I had to use a longer word. Now it seems to work though. Go figure. Sx
