AMT Automag II and/or III?

Anyone out there have one of these? The Automag II is a .22Mag, and the Automag III is .30 Carbine. I've always had a soft spot for "non-conventional" handguns and have seen some of these at (occaisionally) reasonable prices at the local gun shows. Wanted to know if anyone has one and what their impressions are.

I just saw this morning an Automag .30 Carbine at Bud's Gun and Pawn in Weber City, VA. Don't know a thing about them, but if you decide you want one, and have trouble finding one, he has one.

Had an Automag II, bought it on a whim. From what I hear, I was lucky in that I never had the jamming problems that they are prone to. Loud, with a good kick, everyone at the range will think its a 9mm. Flame shoots out the barrel, too. I only used Winchester ammo, as the manual specified. Traded it because the ammo was costly compared to 22 long rifle and/or 9mm.

I have had an Automag III for many years

Its a real blast to play with. Accurate enough to hit soda cans at 50 yards too. I have never had one lick of trouble and it just eats factory ball ammo like popcorn. I had a crosdraw holster made for it and aquired an extra mag as well. Now she does make a bit of noise and blast. (like a 2 foot fireball at every shot) And plugs and muffs are also a good idea when shooting one. I bought it becouse it was a bit of an oddball and it has never let me down. Always bring it when I want to show off something different (I bring my nickle luger too)
Its an excellent gun and I highly recommend it on the fun factor alone.:)

I would like to have the Automag II in .30 Carbine. I have casually looked around for one for awhile. If I see one at the right price I will buy it. I already own a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine and I hate to have to reload just for that one gun.

"From what I hear, I was lucky in that I never had the jamming problems that they are prone to."

John it may just be that your personal experience after having actually owned and fired one is more valuable that the crap you hear on the internet.

Similar names - similar ideas.:D I've got a Blackhawk in .30 Carbine and a Marlin 62 Levermatic in .30 Carbine. I'd like the Automag III just to round out my "modern cowboy" set, so to speak.

jmlv - pretty much what I'd heard about 'em. I like the cross-draw rig idea. I've got a bonus coming. Hmmmmmm..........

I have an Automag III. It was my first Hand Rifle. Bought it for just that reason. Started me on a long and illustrious carreer of rifle-caliber handguns.

It is hands down my favorite handgun. It has been trouble free, and eats up mil-surp or factory ammo without a bobble, including Remington softpoint hunting rounds. It has the BEST trigger of any handgun I've got. It's mighty accurate, and I typically run about 75% on two-litre water-filled bottles at 100 yards, shooting off a rest.

It's loud, alright. Lots of people want to know what it is, and what it shoots. Bright fireballs, and that racy longslide look are real attention-getters. A lot of people really like to shoot it, too. The power-to-weight ratio is very nice. You definitely know you've got a powerhouse, but it's very controllable and balanced. Velocities with factory ammo run in the 1600-1700 fps range.

I got mine for $300. 3-400 dollars seems to be about the working price for these. AMT's definitely have a an issue with spotty quality. Some are just fine, and some are utter crap. I've heard of Automag III's that were very ammo-picky, and a lot of stories about reliability in general across the whole line. The consensus seems to be that if you get a good one, you're all right.

Note: MOST of the bad stories I've heard about AMT's are about the Back-up line, with the 1911's coming in second. The Automags seem to have a better track record. Both my Automag III and my Automag V are nice and accurate, with nice triggers. The V is a bit reliability-challenged, however. This seems to be a factor of the round involved. The recoil is so violent with the .50 A.E. that the gun locks the slide open when it shouldn't, or jams empty cases back into the magazine. Price I pay for having the lightest .50 on the market, I suppose. Might say something about why they're discontinued, too, unless they simply didn't sell. Definitely a possibility with the .50 A.E.. I dunno, but I see more Desert eagle .50's than I do Automags. Eh. a moot point, really. We're supposed to be talking about .30's here anyhow.

Ditto on the AutoMag II, I must be one of the lucky ones, too. No problems out of it and a real head turner at the range.

The only place we are screwed is finding parts for the AutoMag line. Arcadia Machine and Tool went belly up a few years ago and the company that bought them dropped them also. (Can't remember the name of the company, think it started with a G).

I am currently looking for a machinist to make a barrel for it in .17 HMR. The barrel should be the only thing I have to change.

My Uncle has one of the AutoMags in .45 Win Mag. Talk about a hand cannon!!

Galena Industries

bought AMT but they are also out of business now. However, most of the AMT's other than the DOA's have parts available from www.amtgunparts.com
This is a survivalist supply company in the Dakota's and they have almost all the parts. Unfortunately they don't have the DOA parts that I need.

I couldn't get the amtgunparts site to come up, but I did a quick search and found this site:

http://www.survival.com.mx/gunrack/amt/

They list several models, but not the Automag II. I emailed them to see if they had any further info on parts. Specifically I need new springs for mine. It has developed a tendancy for light striking that I think will be cured by new springs.

I really like my Automag (aside from the light strikes) It is loud and most people don't believe it's "Just a .22" till you show them.
It is a very balanced gun, accurate, and I think they are one of the most interesting looking odd guns out there. Just like the Desert Eagle...

anyone have any extra springs laying around?

oops...right above their email button is a big warning to:

"Please don't waste our time calling or
emailing, asking about other AMT guns!"

heh...well. maybe they will reply...

i'm not padding, i swear!

so I kept searching for gun springs...may have found a source:

www.e-gunparts.com

all kinds of goodies here...suprised I haven't been there before.

they seem to have good prices...but only have a couple of the springs for the II in stock...

any ideas on which spring may be causing the light strikes? I'm thinking hammer spring...

Automag II

I picked up a NIB Automag II from my wife's grandfather not to long ago, and haven't regretted it for a second. This is just a fun gun to shoot! Mine has the 6 inch barrell and I've found it to be very accurate out to 50 yards. It does have a tendency to like ball ammo over HP, but mine cycles Winchester Super X and Premium HPs with no problems.

I recently saw a real nice looking Automag II in a local shop for $250. I was thinking of trying to talk him down to $200, would that be a good price on one of these? It did look like a fun toy... :)

Johnwill,
If I could find one for $250 I'd probably pay it! Check out the auction sites and you'll see most are wanting $295 and up (in some cases WAY up:eek: ). I'd like the 4.5" barrell version (second CCW), but they seem to be the rarest of the bunch:( .

I'll have to check the next gun show.

I may have to take a closer look at the gun, it looked mint. I don't remember the barrel length, but it seems it was at least 6", so I guess that would be the long barrel one.

If it is an original AMT and in good shape, I'd pick it up for that price...if they'll take 200 even better.

I got mine about 3 years ago for $175...and everyone is right...they are pushing 300 used on the auction sites. Good potential collector values.

Go to www.gunspring.com for Wolff Gunsprings. They are THE place to go for gunsprings. I don't see anything mentioned for the Automag II, but a spring is a spring. If you talk to them I am sure they can help you out. They may even be able to answer your question about what spring you need. Their phone number is: Toll Free: 800.545.0077, e-mail at mail@gunsprings.com
