AMT 45 cal Backup Any good?

I have owned an AMT Backup in .380 for twenty years and mine has beena good gun. I had a friend that had the .45 Backup and he like his.

I have an AMT DAO Backup in .400 Cor@Bon. It is a fair backup weapon but the trigger is difficult to tune. You can go in and polish the internal surfaces. Mine was full of burrs at first. Give special attention to the contact surfaces and the sides of the hammer strut that fits inside the hammer strut spring. It is press cut out of sheet metal and mine was rough as a file. It is probably one of the simplest semiauto actions ever so disassembly is easy. Reassembly takes a little practice but once you get it down it is easy.
They can be tuned as little. But... the hammer assembly is so light and small it depends on a powerful hammer strut spring to drive the hammer hard enough for reliabile ignition. If you lighten the hammer strut spring enough to get a reasonable trigger pull then you get the occasional failure to fire.
The best you can hope for is a fairly smooth but HEAVVVVVY DAO trigger pull.

Is that the one that has the 4 barrels? Two sets of SXS on top of each other?

If it is, a friend had one, and every so often, all four barrels would light up at one time. Now that's a handful.

The pistol with the 4 barrels SBS/OnU was the COP.

I've got a Dao .45, heavy trigger pull but it works fine otherwise. No sights to speak of, just a groove on the top of the slide.

Some work fine and others don't, spotty QC.

Wow, generally good comments on the Backup. I have shot the .380 and this was a "good" gun. It had a great trigger, dependable and very accurate. I also shot a 45 and it was mechanically good, but the trigger made up for everything else on the gun that was good...it was that bad.

Typically, the DAO Backups..are either good or just plain bad..
Its fairly easy to tell which you have quickly. If you get a good gun..keep it , shoot it and enjoy it. The question is if you got a good gun!

Shoot wel

I had a 45 Backup made in about 1995. Jammed a lot, and once blew the mag out the bottom. But I liked the gun for its size and flatness, and didn't mind the trigger too much. I'd keep a good one, if such a thing exists. I got a refund on mine.
