ammunition test for the 4th

well we like to make noise on the 4th. would anyone be up to attempt the following field experiment?

take your favorite handgun or rifle out, get your favorite cheap fmj and make a few alterations to it.

-pree ww1 filing of nose tip, just 1mm circle of lead at tip as done by british colonials

-the famous "cross hatched x" in the nose of even lead round nose.

id like to see how well they do compared to crappy elcheapo hollow points.

id do on my own but its not easy to do with a bp revolver that only has roundball.

Definately make your own unique marks on the bullet, that way the boys in blue know where to go whena stray round fired into the air hits somebody down the road.

In the name of all that is holy, go get some blanks, and celebrate the fourth with a bang instead of a clank.

I hope he isn't suggesting firing into the air. Sounds like he wants someone to experiment with target shooting and "modified" bullets.

Newton24b - please clarify.

gee whiz i actually didnt get the second part posted. swore i edited it correctly.

shoot your favorite test media. wet phonebooks the standard here from posts.

for those that cant understand, id like to see how well the current crop of fmj loads are actually doing in energy.
take the fmj file the tip down slightly to get some lead exposed and fire into test media.
same with handguns, though some should have the mike hammer style x cut into the tip of the lead or fmj.

warning, it is fun, ive read of people doing it, but its just an idea i have. reading to much mike hammer and id like to see how well those theories hold now with modern ammo.

the big detriment was that standard loadings back in the 50s would not work for pistols because they couldnt push the bullets fast enough, but those 9mm+p or +p+ loads with a tmj seem interesting.

Oh, ok, so you will actually be shooting into something. That does clear that up. Apologies for assuming, but have seen some pretty dumb stuff done with firearms, esp. on holidays...

Anyways, give it a go, see what happens

Please note that firing an FMJ modified to show lead exposed at the tip is potentially dangerous. Such a modification turns what is basically a copper cup full of lead into a copper tube full of lead. Upon firing, it's possible for the lead core to "squirt" through the jacket and leave the jacket left somewhere dangerous.
