Ammo....

I just got a really nice handgun that fires the .40 S&W round. The cheapest I have seen FMJ rounds is $17.xx for 100 rds. Thats not as cheap as most other calibers. A case of 1000 rds was 160 bucks! I can get SKS/AK ammo, 7.62 x 39, for under $100 per 1000 rds. Same brand BTW. Is this really high, or normal...

So whats is the cheapest brand as far as price goes, and where can I get it...

Thanks for the input.

Sorry...there aint no cheap .40 ammo.

Check that, I saw some cheap Wolf .40 ( I think?). But I do NOT recommend it. Wolf 9mm has not been good to me, and I shot at least 500 rounds of the stuff.

Look at the bright side. 40S&W is still less expensive than 45ACP.

Where are you buying your ammo, PF? Anywhere I've been the .40 S&W has run about $1-2 per box higher than the .45 ACP.

I've been buying my ammo from Natchez on-line. They got the best price for .45ACP range ammo. In fact just order another case last night. I buy S&B and have been very happy with it in my USP.45. But I've noticed that depending on you favorite ammo the various on-line suppliers have different prices, so you got to shop around.

I have a .40 and I purchase my ammo from www.ammoman.com and it is good target ammo. I usually get American Eagle 165 for $189.00 for a 1000 rounds. I have heard bad things about Wolf, I have never had one misfire with the American Eagle Ammo. Ammoman also gives you free shipping, very nice people also.

Zip,

Have you looked at Cheaper than Dirt (cheaperthandirt.com)?

They have an excellent selection and good prices. Although I just checked their prices and they show American Eagle 165gr for $9.89 per box of 50. That equals $197.80 for a case of 1000. Not as cheap as I thought. But you can mix and match varieties to fill your case.

I'm looking to start reloading soon. These .40's ain't cheap.

Why don't people like Wolf ammo? I've shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds of this stuff through my Mak (9x18) and my Kahr. (.40). I have never had a problem with it. I think it's accurate. It seems to be loaded consistantly.

The only thing I can think of to complain about it is that it makes my guns dirty, but I've seen other brands that are worse, UMC comes to mind.

Here's the "info" on Wolf from Ammoman. I'm not associated, but I did pick up 500 rounds of .40 from them for a great price...

Just being curious...

Why don't people like Wolf?

Its not that bad. Its fairly reliable. Smells bad. But the lacquer coating on the steel cases will tend to build up in the chamber of some guns, causing jams. And its hard to clean the crap out.

S&B and CCI Blazer costs just a bit more, and seems to be as good or better ammo.

That gives me two choices to cut cost. I can get a .22 rimfire conversion kit for this gun. That would cut the cost quite a bit! What would that do to me though? If I practice mainly with .22, then use .40 for carry, what would happen to my accuacy with .40 cal ammo..

And 2, I can get a barrel that converts to .357 sig. How much does .357 sig ammo cost. I can't find it in my catalogs.....

Reloading: How much would it cost to get started from nothing, and how would I recover the brass? This gun really flings out casings...
