So im supposed to pick up my le6920 tomorrow afternoon, and was wondering what ammo will shoot good out of this. I dont need to shoot dime size groups im perfectly happy with hitting a paper plate from 200 yards. I do not reload as of now so ammo will most likely be from walmart or wholesale sports.

Winchester white box, American Eagle are good leisure plinking ammo.

Hunting dependant upon game and can be expensive.

Federal (Lake City) XM193 or XM855.

Prices are still good right now, but seem to be drifting up...

Enjoy your new rifle!

I second Federal (Lake City) XM193 or XM855. Also, try PMC Bronze in .223 and Fiocchi in .223. I’ve shot a lot of all of that stuff in my Mini-14, and I have plenty of all of that on hand for when this dang weather finally lets me go to the range. New 6920 sitting here, and I can’t get out and shoot it. I’ve also ordered some Brown Bear in .223. I hear good things about shooting Brown Bear thru the 6920 and it’s about $0.15/round cheaper than brass. If it works out, I’m going to pick up a case of it... and a spare firing pin. :D

You didn't buy a really nice AR so you could go cheap on ammo. I shoot steel case in my mini 14 sometimes, it shoots fine, but I prefer brass. Some AR 15's don't like steel ammo. You can try it, it won't hurt anything, but you save like 4 cents a round and I think you should just stick to brass. A box of brass .223 is like $7.99 and a box of steel is about $5.50. You don't save a whole lot.

I met a guy at the range who had a dream ar 15 with an eotech sight. It was easily a $1500+ build. He bought 1000 rounds of wolf ammo and his gun didn't like it, so he offered to sell it to me for $4 a box. I took $20 worth and had fun with it. You will just have to try it and see if your gun shoots it.

American eagle is pretty good, I shoot a lot of that through my mini 14.

Can I shoot steel ammo in my rifle or does that really damage the firing pin or get stuck in the chamber??

Weather has been so bad I have not even had a chance to shoot my 6920 yet, but in talking to many, there is no problem shooting steel thru it. I just ordered 800 rounds of Brown Bear .223. Where I buy my ammo, it’s about $0.14 to $0.15 per round cheaper than brass. The savings is significant. Steel should be fine for the range. I have about 1,000 brass rounds on hand and I won’t shoot any of the steel till I have a couple hundred rounds of brass thru the gun. Pick up an extra firing pin if you are concerned. Cost about $5.

It is usually a good idea to clean your chamber when you switch from steel to brass as steel does not expand like brass does, allowing gasses to seep back into the chamber which dirties up the chamber, and it’s possible that brass might stick when it expands if you don’t clean the chamber after shooting steel. Many won’t shoot steel in their AR’s, but it hurts nothing.
