Ammo Storage & Guns Safes

Question to all of you safe owners. How many of you store ammo in the same safe that store your guns in? This may sound dumb it did to me at first ever since I got my safe I put all of my guns and all my ammo(OK maybe not all of it but alot) in the safe. I never thought twice about it. But talking to a friend and fellow shooter recently the subject came up and he thought I was out of my mind. Am I? I can't think of a better place to store it. I know it's safe and don't have to worry about unauthorized hands, the same reasons I bought the safe for guns. Ok Guys am I the only one doing this? Am I missing something? Lets here it.

I cant fit all the ammo i own inside the safe with my pistols. So the rest of it sits on top of the safe :D

Different story with the long guns. It [the ammo] all fits inside.

"[Even if there would be] few tears shed if and when the Second Amendment is held to guarantee nothing more than the state National Guard, this would simply show that the Founders were right when they feared that some future generation might wish to abandon liberties that they considered essential, and so sought to protect those liberties in a Bill of Rights. We may tolerate the abridgement of property rights and the elimination of a right to bear arms; but we should not pretend that these are not reductions of rights." -- Justice Scalia 1998

Basically, the idea is that you store your ammo separate from your guns just in case unauthorized hands get ahold of things. However, I am inclined to agree about storing the goods in a locked safe, assuming the safe stays locked.

I think the thing no one wants is to come home and get shot with their own gun and own ammo...which can happen when these are stored together in an unsecured arrangement such as one of those nice glass paneled (but locked of course) display racks many people have. If you really think your safe is safe from violation, then there should not be a problem.

I have one of those cheap metal locking gun cabinets (Stack-On, Homak, etc.) and pop riveted some adjustable metal shelf supports inside and use it as a ammo storage locker.

I didn't want to keep storing my ammo on the closet shelf any more (it couldn't take the load ;) ), it keeps the ammo out of sight, and a locking cabinet just makes sense. Also, my ammo cache (5,000+ rds of each rifle and handgun ammo -- total 10,000 rds plus shotshells and .22LR!) won't fit into the safe with the guns. :D

I have yet another one of those cabinets full of my reloading supplies (powders, primers, bullets, brass, tools, etc.) in my reloading area.

Now, I didn't intend to use those cabinets for that when I bought them. I had initally used them for gun storage, but as my collection expanded (reproduced all by itself in the closet -- I swear, dear...it really did ;) ) I finally broke down and bought a real safe. What better use could I find for the old cabinets?
