ammo shortage again?

Has anyone else noticed that 38 special and .357 ammo are getting scarce again? I’ve been trying my normal online resources the last few days and with the exception of the assorted big bucks 20 rounds per box stuff the options have been very limited. I did though find Fiocchi .357 125 Gr. JSP at ammo to go @ $20.00 a box of 50 rounds. Ordered 250 rounds to be used as range ammo.

Old Bear,

Yup, seems that way online. My local shop is much better these days, though.

You may be all set, but midwayusa has some Sellier & Bellot 38s:

wadcutters and 158 gr FMJs

I've used the wadcutters and I like them. The FMJs are less expensive.

I've been very happy with midway, too.

I haven't seen a reliable source for .38 Special or .357 Magnum for a while. I don't think there is ANOTHER shortage, I just think the last shortage isn't quite over yet.

Surprised at Walmart

I stopped in the other day and on the shelf was more .38 special than I could carry. It was Winchester jhp +p in 50 round boxes for $18.97. I bought a reasonable amount and left plenty for others to enjoy.

Depends on the region.

Things seemed to improve a tad in the late summer of '09 where I live, but this past fall the shortage came back with a vengence. In fact, I'd say the shortage where I live right now is the worst it has ever been.

Everybody is completely wiped out of ammo, except shotgun shells and one gunshop out in the middle of nowhere that only the locals seem to know about who has a pretty diverse, if thin stock. I've not seen more than a few (maybe 10 boxes in misc rifle calibers) at Wal-Mart in months. And whenever there is a local gunshow, dealers from out of my immediate region come in and bring in ammo by the crap ton, furthering my theory that the shortage is now VERY regional in nature.

Part of it for my area is that I've talked to a number of people who are convinced that the country is going to collapse into bloody civil war in the next year or two, and their ammo buying reflects this belief. A few have stated that they hit Wal-Mart in the early hours of the morning and buy whatever comes off the truck before it hits the shelves (up to the per customer limit), and that they then stop at all the local gunshops and clean out whats left there too. One guy said he had stockpiled 25,000-30,000 rounds of 5.56 NATO, but he wouldn't be comfortable until he had "hoarded" (his words) 50,000 rounds.

Seems it was starting to get better several months ago. I was starting to see calibers showing up on the shelves more often. Here (center of the country) I am seeing the shelves getting bare again, except for .40. I hope it's not the start of things to come again. For the last few weeks, most everything is gone again, except for gun stores that charge way to much to want to pay. I hope it's just a restock thing but given what's happen in the last year and a half, I'm doubting it. I don't think the shortage has ever stopped. It just got better for a while.

Our local Wal Mart had just about everything except .380 when I looked the other day. The local gun store has plenty of everything. They even had lots of primers in all sizes. Things seem to be looking good here.

Try Farm&Fleet

Not sure where you all live but here we go to a Farm&fleet for ammo ....just there today they had at least five boxes of your most popular rounds except 40 s&w probably 20 boxes of that...could be why its on sale right now.

Reload my friends. While shortages are still an issue, they are not nearly the issue they are for someone does not reload. Add some simple casting equipment and it even gets better.

According to one of the last messages from Massad from this years Shot Show he stated from what he heard at the show the ammo and re-loading supply dilemma will continue and he sees no change in things in the near future and here is his statement and it is a quote
The unnatural buying frenzy that followed the election of President Obama is waning in terms of guns, but is still absolutely in effect insofar as ammunition. While the ammo shortage has let up a little, I don’t see it getting a whole lot better any time soon.

The above quote was posted on Jan 26,2010 as titled Shot Show Retrospective

Unprimed Winchester .357 brass is around .19 apiece from Cabela's if ya order a thousand.

Considering you get 100% of yer brass back with a wheelgun...;)

158gr LSWC are around $50/500.

I haven't been having a LOT of trouble finding componants but calling around saves gas. Not to mention the last time I made a trip down to the shop to buy primers I wound up buying a $500 pistol. THOSE were expensive primers...

"That which hits the fan will not be distributed evenly."

Right now, I imagine the ammo companies are busting their humps trying to get the semi-auto stuff on the shelves (particularly 9mm). I'd bet money that there are less revolver owners, and that most owners shoot fewer rounds in a given amount of time, so demand is lower.

Personally, I don't see the ammo and component shortage getting much better any time soon. Panic buying is still going on. People are not going to be caught short again so they grab all the ammo they see. This causes the shortage to perpetuate its self. I am as guilty as others. I have several thousand lead bullets in various calibers and weights but I am constantly buying more. If we would all just stop hoarding for a year and only buy what we're shooting, the problem would go away and prices would return to normal.

Around here, Gander has everything in stock - ammo, components, etc. Of course it is priced at GM's typically MSRP+ amounts, but it IS available

Ammo Shortage??

yes the "ammo shortage" is getting better here in Oklahoma wal-mart is stocking more, and gun show avalibility & prices have leveled off.but then the Austin TX gun scare happened, and people are panic buying agin, but its mostly guns now, prices have stayed high and i bet they will stay high for some time too.

Can you reload cheaper than buying? By what I am reading here, it's already 29 cents for that 357 round without the primer and powder. If you don't shoot very often, is it worth it?
