Ammo shipping question...

What is the easiest way to ship ammo from Iowa to Illinois. A buyer has an FOID card that he will fax a copy of to my dealer. Then I will ship a handgun and ammo to his dealer from my dealer. What shipper would I use and how do they determine how much to charge for the shipment? I need to know how much to charge the buyer, actual cost. If anyone knows the least expensive way with the least amount of hassle, that would be helpful.

Thank You,

BB

Fedex or Ups as ammo cannot go through the USPS.

Charges are a factor of weight X distance X volume of the package.

A handgun and ammo should be small, so volume aspect will be negligible, so weight X distance, plus whatever your FFL will charge

His FFL needs to send a copy to your dealer before shipping the gun

An FOID card will mean nothing to your dealer in Iowa, he'll want an FFL copy from the buyers dealer in Illinois (he cant ship without it).

For info on how to ship firearms see this sticky on The High Road: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=651375

If your dealer is going to ship the handgun, ask him to use USPS and a Priority Mail flat rate box....it will be half the price of UPS Next Day or FedEx Overnight. (only dealers and manufacturers can mail firearms other than rifles or shotguns)

Shipping ammunition is a bit different. It is non mailable and can only be shipped "Ground" via a common carrier (UPS or FedEx). If you ship the firearm and ammunition together you commit a Federal crime.

Ammunition must be labled "ORM-D" (your dealer should know this).
