Bottom Gun

I went into a nationally known gun distributor's store in Prescott, Arizona last weekend to look around since I hadn't been in there in years. They had a pretty good price on 7.62X39 ammo so I asked the clerk for a case of it.
The clerk asked me for my driver's license, which I assumed he needed to verify my Arizona residence. Then, to my astonishment, he explained that he needed to enter my date of birth and my driver's license number into their database in order to complete the sale. When I questioned this requirement, he explained that this was a new law. When I further questioned this action and wanted some details on this alleged 'new law', another employee told me that this requirement was "store policy for all ammo sales" and added "but we don't keep the information you give to us. It only appears on our invoices".
At this point, I explained to the young man that I had a "policy" of my own which was not to allow businesses to compromise my privacy by forcing me to participate in their nonsense. I then told the young man that I was very sorry, but he would have to keep the ammo and that I would buy it somewhere else. Then I left the store.
Call me paranoid if you will, but I just had a bad feeling about this sort of thing.
Does anyone know what is happening here or why they would want to keep records on ammo sales?
