Ammo registration?

Bottom Gun

I went into a nationally known gun distributor's store in Prescott, Arizona last weekend to look around since I hadn't been in there in years. They had a pretty good price on 7.62X39 ammo so I asked the clerk for a case of it.
The clerk asked me for my driver's license, which I assumed he needed to verify my Arizona residence. Then, to my astonishment, he explained that he needed to enter my date of birth and my driver's license number into their database in order to complete the sale. When I questioned this requirement, he explained that this was a new law. When I further questioned this action and wanted some details on this alleged 'new law', another employee told me that this requirement was "store policy for all ammo sales" and added "but we don't keep the information you give to us. It only appears on our invoices".
At this point, I explained to the young man that I had a "policy" of my own which was not to allow businesses to compromise my privacy by forcing me to participate in their nonsense. I then told the young man that I was very sorry, but he would have to keep the ammo and that I would buy it somewhere else. Then I left the store.
Call me paranoid if you will, but I just had a bad feeling about this sort of thing.
Does anyone know what is happening here or why they would want to keep records on ammo sales?

May One ask the name of the store? I realize that I might be able to figure it out by process of elimination, but I wouldn't want to make a mistake and be thinking evil thoughts of a innocent party

Bottom gun;
You aren't the only one that has tangled with them.I did a month ago on a firearm sale and told them where they could place the firearm and if they wanted to pullt he trigger it was fine with me.The DL for ammo sales is something they ahve been doing for a long time.Reason I got was that they had to check age of purchaser.I'm 59 and they are trying to tell me they have to check for age?As far as keeping records. They can go back and tell ATF everything that any person bought for the last 10 yrs with no problem.Thats about the time they got the computer system.I had been doing business in here for 14 yrs and I think no more. They are not customer friendly anymore.I allso don't know if I trust them anymore.

I'm old and deceitful.

Beemerb,

I'm 52 and have grey in my beard so it couldn't have been a question of age.
I hadn't been in there in 20 years since I live in the southern part of the state.
Think I'll wait another 20 before I go back there.

some of our stores in Maryland claim that. It's a store policy usually, or they are afraid of the State Gestapo, err, Police, etc...

Just take your business elsewhere.

BottomGun....I have lived in eight decades, my beard is long and white. I have run into the same thing at the same place, only bout fifteen miles from that store. Hate to miss the good prices but quit doin business with them.

Side note...where the heck is Elgin AZ? Never noticed it and can't find it on the map.

Sam...I may be old but at least I'm confustipated.

C. R. Sam,

Sorry to hear you had trouble there too. Kinda makes you wonder how they stay in business.

Elgin is near the Mexican border between Sierra Vista and Nogales. Give me a holler if you're ever headed down this way. I usually have a cold one in the fridge.
