Ammo question

I believe it originally referred to .38 Special ammunition loaded to FBI specifications. Then the term was applied to 10mm ammunition loaded to FBI specifications. I do not know the details, but I think the .38 was similar to +P and the 10mm load was actually a weaker loading than what might have been considered a full load for the 10mm.

Lead 158gr SWC-HP +P...

As posted, the "FBI load" is the .38spl +P 158gr lead SWC-HP.
It's also called the "T load"(US Dept of the Treas) or the "Chicago Load"(use by the Chicago IL PD).

I purchased a box of this .38spl +P round from Buffalo Bore about 5 years ago for my Ruger GPNY .38spl revolver.

I loaded up a bunch of swaged lead HP to +P specs a couple of years ago-just in case. Those things are wicked in wet newspaper.

The FBI shoot out, miami 1986, changed many things in the ammo we now use. The 40 S&W was born. More testing by the FBI showed bullet design is most important. In 38 special, think federal hydra shok.

T loads, ammunition...

KyJim is correct. The most common term for the "T load" is the +P+ type 110gr JHP. I'd also heard the "FBI load" & "T load" labels applying to the lead 158gr SWC-HP +P round a few times.

Depends on what era you're referring to....currently, the FBI issues Winchester PDX1's to their personnel. Rod

The 9mm Winchester Silvertip became the scapegoat of the Miami shootout. But you really ought not just bring a bunch of handguns to an assault rifle fight.

Isn't, or wasn't the GDHP 135g +P .38spl the new FBI load?
The Gold Dot wasn't developed until after the agency went to 10mm and then .40 S&W. Perhaps they grandfathered some older agents in and let them keep their revolvers with this load.

Ok, let me refreeze that, the old .38 FBI load, not talking about 10mm. I think I might have read that, on the Internet (LOL) the LSWCHP 158g +P was replaced to police or other law enforcement with the GDHP 135g +P using the FBI standard ballistics tests.
