Ammo quantity limitations??

I was recently told by a former LEO that there is a federal law which prohibits possession of "excessive" quantities of ammunition which can be used in "high power semi-automatic firearms" (.223, 7.62, etc.). He thought it was 1,000 rounds, but he wasn't sure. I've never heard of such a law and most of us on TFL would probably be in violation instantly if it is correct. Hell, I seldon buy ammo in quantities less than 1,000 rounds. Otherwise, I'd be buying ammo two or three times a month.

Any truth to it??

If "the people" in the 1st, 4th, 9th & 10th amendments, means "the people", why do some folks think "the people" in the 2nd amendment means "the state"?

nothing on the books on the federal level

there have been proposals to ban the sales of military caliber ammo

.223
.308
9mm

Thought I heard something like that awhile back, but it is not just for ammunition. It's like for hording "anything" in excess. Like canned food, toilet paper, etc.

What is an "excess"???

To me an excess of ammo would be when there is NOT enough space in your house to hold another round of ammo, or when said house fails to stand-up under the strain of said ammo.

HCI or one of the other anti-freedon terrorist groups has suggested that firearms owners obtain an arsenal license if they have more than a certain number of firearms (I can't remember that number) and/or more than 1,000 rounds of ammo total. The suggested law would require approved gun safes and allow for annual inspections of the property to assure that all regulations are complied with.

4 Reduction of the number of guns to require an Arsenal license
Right now the proposed Arsenal licenses which Senator Feinstein
should be pushing for, requires an "Arsenal License" for those
people who feel they need more than 20 guns and 1000 rounds of
ammunition. We feel that number is too generous, due to the fact
that any number of guns constitutes a grave threat to the safety
of the community, we suggest strongly that this license limit
be reduced to possession greater than 5 guns and 250 rounds of
ammunition.

That "alleged" HCI Master Plan from 1994 has been debunked. A total fabrication.

Of course this doesn't mean that HCI is a pro-gun organization either... ;)

Still... many 3 piece suits appear to have woven from this 'total fabrication.'

IMNSHO, I believe this is the area where outfits like HCI and their ilk stand the best possible chance of restrictions. I base this on the reactions of non shooters when they hear about someone in possesion of several thousand rounds of ammunition. It is just beyond their understanding of how case quantities and bricks of ammo add up. I have had several people, all non gun owners but not anti gun, question me as to the "need" to have more than 100 rounds of ammunition!!! When I showed the 3 empty bricks of .22's and told them that was 1500 rounds, they could scarcely believe it. One day, after picking up 10,000 rounds of .22's that were on sale, I showed one of these persons the pile of it in my trunk. I asked him how many rounds he thought were there. He replied something around 500 or so! When I told him there was 20 times that amount he was flabergasted, and questioned why in the world I would "need" that excessive amount. I told him that was just a little over a months supply. I'm tellin ya, the *average* person has no idea what a quantity of ammunition even looks like or even how fast you can use it up in a session of shooting. I can easily see a law going into effect limiting the amount of ammunition someone can have on hand. My best advice to anyone is if you don't handload, better start looking real hard into it b4 the demand(and price)for reloading equipment skyrockets :(

We will see limitation on ammunition imposed from two directions.

First, what was discussed here. I agree. Your average, everyday citizen has no concept of how much ammo a shooter runs through. Second, environmental laws will be used to supress the use of lead. We can expect the use of health and safety laws to restrict use of hazardous materials such as powder and primers.
