Ammo purchase

In my state, all the ammo that can be used in handguns is kept so that it is accessible only to employees of the store. Not sure if this is law or just policy. Walmart and Sports Authority keep all but shotgun shells locked up. Dick's displays some shotgun and rifle ammo in the regular aisles. On Black Friday, Dick's and Sports Authority had ammo, buy one get 50% off the price of second of same or lesser price. But Sports Authority asks the birth date and one must sign that it is the correct date. No other stores do that. Elderly is a mild term for describing my age. Nobody asks for ID. Sports Authority had regular prices for .410 shot shells about $2.00 per box less than Dick's.

It depends on where I'm shopping. Every Wal-Mart I've ever been in keeps most of their ammo (including all of the handgun ammo) in a locked case. However, neither the closest Gander Mountain nor Bass Pro Shops (both in IN) have any of their ammo locked up; it simply sits on the shelf just like a pair of shoes or anything else. While it's been a while since I was in one, the last Cabela's I was in (in WV) had handgun ammo sitting unlocked on the shelf too. Most, though not all, local gun shops in my area have their ammo on a shelf behind the counter so you have to get employee assistance.
