Ammo Problem ??

I was out shooting yesterday with a 7MM Rem Mag. On about 25% of my shots, the primer on the cartridge was knocked out...usually jamming the bolt action. has anyone experienced anything like this? Is it an ammo issue or perhaps the gun.

Not enough information. Was that the first time you shot that gun? Did the problem come about when you fired the Herter's ammo? Did the gun shoot other brands of ammo o.k.?
If the gun has not had a problem with other brands of ammo, blown primers are usually an indication of an over-load. However, if this is a new gun (not been fired with other ammo), it could indicate a head space problem.

Good questions and it has me thinking. I have shot Remington Core-Lokt with no issues but the head-space observation is very interesting. I am going to get another box of Remington and see if I have the same problem.

Thanks very much for the input.

the primer on the cartridge was knocked out

If the primer backed out that can be an indication that not enough powder was used in the loads. You said it shoots other brands fine so I would contact Herters and see what they say.

Primers getting blown out like that indicates excessive pressure. It's also a bad headspace indicator. This time it's the ammo, not your rifle though. They'd have been coming out with the Remington too otherwise.
140's are too light for a 7mm Mag anyway. snicker.

Bad Ammo?

Thanks for the input....by "head space", are you referring to a gap between the front of the bolt and the rear of the cartridge?

Shouldn't be a gap between bolt face and the base of the cartridge. The cartridge seats on its belt, so normally there's no problem.

It's possible--just guessing--that the particular brand has problems with the belt dimension.

You could stick a small piece of tape on the base of the cartridge and see if more force is needed to close the bolt. Keep adding tape until you learn something. Again, I'd suspect problems in the dimensions of the cartridge case.

All guesses, though, mostly based on the comment that CoreLokt works okay.

FWIW, for many years the 139-grain bullet was the common loading in 7mm Mag.

Ammo Problem?

I like the tape idea.....that should clarify is the head space could be an issue....I'm shooting again late this week and will give it a try.

Thanks
