Ammo price comparison between calibers?

I've been trying to find the answer to this online, and looking at ammo websites has just let left me confused. Can anyone tell me GENERALLY the order of price these calibers go in?

.38 special
9mm
.380

My first gun may not be a .22, as originally intended, because it may be too long before I'm able to afford another one. I hope to go to a gun shop soon and get a feel of how different guns fit in my hand, and price of ammo for practice will be a concern. Kel Tec P3at, P9, and Charter Arms Off Duty have caught my attention.

Thanks!

i would stay away from a 380...you can get 9mm which is a step up in power and is cheaper to shoot....or if you go the snubbie route get a .38

Just did a quick comparison at ammotogo.com, comparing fmj, brands vary but it looks like 9mm is cheapest and followed my 38 special and lastly 380. but the price spread was only around 20 dollars difference for 500 rounds. To me thats not enough of a difference to have the tail wag the dog. More important is your intended use of the pistol in question and matching both pistol and ammo to intended use. Is this a home defence, conceal carry or a target pistol. Thats the first question to answer, then on to pistol and caliber. Good luck in your decisions.

As others said, .9mm will be the most affordable to shoot, around $10 for a box of 50. Shooting .38 can get expensive, they usually $17 for a box of 50. Other than the occasional box of buffalo bore or double tap, I never really by ammo online. I live in N.Va and normally buy my ammo from a LGS or Walmart.

Wow, I didn't realize 9mm was that much cheaper than .38 special. It looks like the more expensive 9mm would pay for itself, eventually. Thanks for the replies!

Here is a good site for your reference: http://www.ammoengine.com/

The 9MM is the least costly. Generally 38 Special next, but a couple of foreign brands of 380ACP may have a cheaper per round cost. That changes real quick though with most US manufacture's 380 running 3 times the price per round as 38 Special.

Here locally in central KY, Walmart is selling 9 mm (Federal 100 count packs) at $19.97 per 100. That's as cheap as I've seen it in years...and within a nickle of what I can hand load, not counting the cost of the brass case. I've got two cases on order just for the brass alone. Rod
