AMMO on the CHEAP

Noticed that depending on where you go ammo can range between not so bad of a price to "what the hell are they thinking is there gold in here" ?

Walmart is alright prices on smaller caliber but when you have a 40 cal it is not so much a good deal at all.

On line it seems a good deal but then shipping is outrageous and when added into the cost its no cheaper that anything else out there.

I dont reload (not able to and dont have the equipment to do so)

So i ask the brothers in the forum this. Where is the best deals on ammo?

If they have what you want, Wal-Mart wins hand down. As you have noted, shipping pretty much kills any on-line purchases. The only (?) problem with Wal-Mart is that they typically only have range fodder, at least in the calibers I shoot (9mm, .40 S&W and .45 Auto). For serious self-defense ammo I have to buy on-line. I usually check Sportsmans Guide and Natchez, and buy from whichever has the better price on what I need that day.

Honestly, I buy from cheaper than dirt 90% of the time. Even with the taxes and shipping it is $50 cheaper per order than my local gun shops.
I suggest ordering 1000 rounds or so at a time. The shipping get progressively more acceptable.

No Shipping Charge

I have found that Graf&Sons of Missouri doesn't charge shipping, just a small handling charge which is the same for any size order.
They ship fast and have pretty good prices as well as many hard to find calibers and a variety of brands.
Extremely friendly customer service.
Ammoman of NJ(aka Discount Distributors)also charges no shipping and has some good deals.
The range of brands and available calibers is more limited than Graf's,but still pretty good.
I never had a single problem with their service.

There are often 1-2 ammo remanufacturers that sell bulk pistol ammo at our local gun shows, that's where I've been able to find much of my inexpensive practice ammo.

For new factory loads I go with SG Ammo. In 9mm and .38spl they usually have the best prices. They carry a lot of surplus LE ammo. So, you get Winchester Ranger, Federal, Hornady CQ, and others at a good price. Plus their range ammo is competitive with Wal Mart when you compare OTD prices.

Inexpensive good ammo has become more and more difficult to find. My shooting buddies and I have networked our resources. To be more specific, I scour the internet auctions and ammo web sites while another guy stops at guns stores during the course of his day and tries to bargain quantity buys. Yet a third guy that does a lot of traveling stops at gun shows along the way.

We have the resources to buy in bulk as each of us shoots several thousand rounds per month so we can often wheel and deal on large quantities of ammo especially since we split it three ways. One has to be careful as what may appear as a smoking deal on ammo can kill you on the back side with shipping costs. I look for the deals that come with free shipping.

Of course what makes this successful for us is that we shoot the same calibers.
If several guys lived in the same area, it might be helpful to form an "ammo club" and pool assets to buy in bulk. Quantity equates to bargaining power...some times.

We have found an ammo dealer that travels our local gun show circuit and he has been a good source of ammo for us. However, to get the great deals, we must be able to spend several thousand dollars for a single purchase. This is where it is really important to be able to pool resources and split the purchase among the "investors."

I buy my cheap, range ammo from my local Walmart or Academy sports, whatever they have.

My carry ammo is almost exclusively from Wilson Combat, which I order online from them. That stuff is expensive, but awesome.

go to gunbroker or auctionarms and look up seller sportsmanssupply. all his auctions are free shipping, and if you're patient, you can get it cheap.

also, the-armory.com has some good prices sometimes. the shipping is high, but usually still a good deal.

just scored 1000 rounds of UMC .40 S&W for 200.00 at the local Military Surplus What a DEAL :) I know UMC wouldnt be a lot of peoples first choice but its range ammo. Plus i couldnt pass that up.

Walked in and he had a pile of ammo and he wanted 11.29 per box i told him i would buy all 20 box's if i could do it for 200.00 out the door. At first he said no way. then i said well i also need an ammo storage box Its a cool WWII style ammo bin and some other odds and ends. He said if you buy the other stuff i can do the ammo at cost. so we did the deal and talked guns and ammo for an hour or so.

I believe i made a good connection for future ammo :)

I am not sure there are consistent "deals" anywhere. I have found good buys at several places, all random but it is a matter of being at the right place at the right time and having the money. Overall, I don't think you can beat Walmart. BTW, if you are ever in Bentonville, Ar at Walmart store number 1 that is the place to buy ammo - the Winchester white box, 100 rds 9mm 115's went for 19.57 or something close and the 22 ammo that is 18.57 is 14.57. As I understand, no shipping from the central warehouse and they pass the savings on.

The other place I pick up really good deals is at major gun shows. I go to two a year in Wichita, KS that are put on by the same people so the same vendors come and there are two ammo dealers who try to outdo each other which I love. Their prices are so good you need to get your ammo purchased early for the popular brands and weights. I have never failed to see a great deal on ammo at one of these shows. They both bring big trucks full of ammo and it is a feast.

AMMO on the CHEAP,

AMMO on the CHEAP,

AMMO on the CHEAP,

AMMO on the CHEAP!

That's a beginning of a new country song.

Check www.mastercast.net, a reload service. I have fired off many thousand of their products (9mm and .38sp) without a problem. Reliable, prompt, and inexpensive. This last (inexpensive) is especially true if you send them your spent brass in exchange (same type and number). Mastercast is a Mom and Pop operation (her name is Pat) in rural western Pennsylvania -- exactly the kind of business we need to support.

If you choose to send them your spent brass, do it by USPS Priority Mail. I usually sent them a thousand cases in a ten dollar box. Any other way I know of costs twice that.

Cordially, Jack
