Ammo in FL?

My wife decided she wanted to take a trip down to Florida in March since her dad and step-mom will be renting a condo for the month. Hey, a free room in FL for a week in March, I can't complain.

That said, we're headed to Hutchinson Island, and I was curious if anyone's down that way, and knows of any gun shops nearby that'd be worth stopping at to potentially make some purchases to ship back to myself. Any thoughts, tips, or advice?

Forget .22LR - I haven't seen any in stores in about a year. People wait in Walmart starting at about 6AM just to get what little they restock at 7AM.

.223/5.56 is starting to appear. You might find some.

22-250 is one you may have success with if you are willing to do some legwork. That is not a popular caliber here (lack of suitable critters that require long-range shooting) so when it does get stocked it can sit there without getting scarfed up.

Look for the big stores - Academy, Gander Mountain, even Walmart.

You can find handgun ammo and .223 at all of the above pretty much any day. I've seen 22-250. But I'd forget about .22 unless you want to call to find out when the shipment comes in and be there when the store opens on that day.

Yeah, I know .22LR is hard to come by, and if you can find it, it's usually crazy expensive.

@mikejonestkd, I'm not far from Beikirch's, and have been there several times, but I refuse to allow the state to record what I buy, and I refuse even more to pay their fees ($10-$20 per transaction) once the background check system is up and running.

Look for a gun show while you are in town and buy as much as you want there. It's not necessarily "cheap", but everything is available.

I generally don't waste my time with gun shows. Based on past experiences, the prices are generally inflated at shows, and just aren't worth the hassle.

Gander Mountain

Not the cheapest option, but the GM's in Saint Augustine and Lake Mary have been fairly well stocked lately with .223, .45ACP, 9mm, .40, and ammo for revolvers. Not much .380. The Lake Mary location did have some good stock with CCI Minimags, but that was over a month ago. I suspect that they're kaput with 22lr like everyone else. I can't speak to anything in the area you're headed to.

The only place that I have noticed a lack of ammo here in west central Florida is Walmart. Every now and again they may have a box or two of rifle or handgun ammo available.

All the LGS seem to have plenty of ammo if you are willing to pay the price. Except for .22LR but more and more of that is showing up. I reload most of my ammo because of the volume that I shoot. But I have purchased some factory ammo the other week and the prices where outrages. Ex. 38 Special 130 Gr FMJ for $20.00 a box of 50, .45 Auto 230Gr FMJ $33.95 a box of 50 , .45 Colt 250Gr RNFP $40.00 a box of 50 and 9mm 115gr FMJ $26.95 a box of 50. :(:(
