Ammo for a short Bushy?

I've got a 16 inch Bushmaster that I need to break in. It hasn't been the most reliable of critter, sometimes failing to strip the top round from the mags. I'm going to be on vacation next week and will be wringing it out. I'm planning on getting a case of Federal American Eagle or Winchester for this purpose. How is this ammo for reliability in a Bushy?

I've had excellent results using Fed Ameican Eagle .223

55gr FMJ shoots pretty good (~1.25" @100 yds) & their 50 HP 1/2" groups out of my Colt HBAR 20"

Cheap $-wise, too.

What kind of mags are you using?

It has been my experience that most reliability troubles are magazine related. I won't use anything but USGI mags in an AR. My Bushmaster shorty came with an incredibly poor 10 round mag that I like to use when I let people I don't like shoot--ain't I a stinker?:D

Just Say No to plastic magazines.

As for ammo, I like the South African surplus M193 and PMC for cheap fodder. I've been trying to lay hands on a supply of "real" M193 FMJ but have so far been a day late and a dollar short.

I hope you like your Bushmaster as much as I like mine.

I wouldn't dismiss plastic mags just that quickly. I have put hundreds of rounds thru my Bushmaster using only Thermolds with no failures.

As for ammo, I've fed PMC, Black Hills, Rem UMC, and Win USA without a hitch.

Have fun on vacation!

I haven't had problems with any ammo I've tried in my Bushmaster Dissipator, but my favorite is South African PMP commercial (brass case, reloadable, and cheap). This is the ammo that comes in the brown boxes with a gazelle on the front.

Regarding magazines, I've also had good luck with both USGI and Thermolds.

ammo for short bushy

reliability problems with ARs are not always ammo or mag related. Just usually. (don't I sound like an expert!) If you have tried the above 2 possibilities, then check out the Fulton Armory Homepage(http://www.fulton-armory.com/)they have something that may help. I have cut and pasted the text from their website. sorry that is the limit of my expertise. I would have preferred to be able to do the entire page as an attachment. (can anybody tell me how to do that?
..Extractor Enhancer: the D-fender...Significantly reduces failures to extract! Shorty users, pay special attention!CAR shooters have reported to Fulton Armory that the D-Fender works! If you're experiencing extraction failures you can't other
wise remedy(e.g.,dirtychamber, bad ammo),install a new extractor,extractor spring and D-Fender!
Small Arms Review (Sept.'99) tells us it solves the problem! It's good insurance for full-length AR-15 rifles, too.

Probably the only failure I have not had in 30 years of shooting AR guns is a falure to extract. 99.9% of the time its a bad mag or a dislike for a certain ammo load. One thing they do well is extract a empty case(not counting old non chrome SP-1 chambered guns anyway).

Hmmm...I use plastic mags all the time. SIG 550, Steyr AUG - they all
work very nicely.

But the AR wants GI 30 round magazines, and nothing else.

If one has extraction problems, get a new extractor, or better two.
And a dozen gas rings, if you're at that.
