Ammo for 1911A1

I just got my first 1911A1 (SA). What hollow point ammo would you recommend. I am thinking something 230 grain and non plus P, because I don't want to mess with heavy springs until I know more. Anyway, what is feed reliable and proven effective. Thanks.

Hello. Proven performers are the standard pressure 230 gr Federal HydraShoks and Remington's Golden Sabers in the same weight.
These hit the same point of aim as ball, which is good for practice, and are effective self-defense rounds. As you've noted, they are standard, not Plus P rounds. In my experience, they are accurate. A cheaper, but still effective JHP is Federal's Classic Hi Shok 230 gr JHP. It has the same rounded ogive as the HydraShok, but no post nor nickle-plated cases. It expands well and costs considerably less. Best.

I don't know about HydraShocks but the ogive on Golden Sabers was designed to closely follow that of "hardball", RGS will feed in about any 1911 that feeds FMJ's.

Any of the 230gr. JHP loads are good. Federal Hydra-Shok, Remington Golden Sabre, Speer Gold Dot.

Remington and Speer seem to be loaded closer
to the advertised velocity than Federal. (in MY experience anyway)

I use Speer Gold Dots (200 gr. I think) in my SA. The feed great, and they're known as the "flying ashtray." Look at them and you'll know why.

Consider also Proload. Very accurate and dependable; most loads are loaded with Gold Dots. Pricing isn't bad, either, especially from someone like Discount Distributors (http://www.ammoman.com).

Proload loads both regular and +P flavors of .45, both with Gold Dots: http://www.proload.com/specs/specifications.htm

I (and may others) like this better than the Remington GS for accuracy and the performance of GDs is at least as good (probably better after obstacles like glass).

No commercial relation/interest, etc. ;-)
