Ammo Direct?

Cobra 4-6

New member
I've been shooting about 300-500 rounds per week lately. As a result, I'm going thru ammo like crazy. I don't have the time (or inclination) to devote to reloading.

Ammo Direct (http://www.ammodirect.com) offers 180gr 40 S&W reloads for about $135/1000, a substantial savings over what I usually pay.

Anyone know anything about this company and the quality of their loads? FWIW, I use aUSP 40c (w/supported barrel).

Thanks

I went through about 1,250 rounds of their stuff. The first order of 250 was perfect. The following 1,000 rounds had 6 or 7 rounds that were squibs or failed to feed (bullet seated shallow and primer not seated properly).

They certainly had some QC problems. I've shot nothing by Sellier & Bellot since then: over 2,000 perfect rounds.

For a little more money, you could get factory ammo from www.ammoman.com. Granted you got 1000 fmj 40 s&w for $135. That was PLUS shipping and after they suggest sending your check via registered mail, yaddy yaddy yaddy. Check out ammoman. The price includes shipping, you can use a credit card, and Eric the Ammoman is totally reliable.

Thanks, guys...

Gopher - I've been a customer of Eric's for years. Great prices, great service. Just thought I'd look into a possible alternative. At the rate I'm going thru ammo, it's about $1,000/yr in savings. Now, what could I do with that $1,000? Can you say P7?

I've had great success with Georgia Arms' (http://www.georgia-arms.com) ammo. About the same price range you quoted. I have about 3,000 rounds of their 180gr FMJ through a Glock 23 with never an ammo-related problem. I have also used several rifle calibers with good success. Check 'em out.

Cobra, I really think you should put a little money and time into reloading. You'll be surprised to see how much ammo you can produce in a short time and at a serious savings. Get a Dillon 550B or a 650 and you'll be cranking out a whole lot of ammo. I can load about 400 rounds in one hour, and that's at a somewhat leisurely pace.

Wow, that is cheap. But for another 30 bucks you could get 1000 rd's of Sellier & Bellot from cheaperthandirt.com
Or FrontSight! is right, reload. It does take a bit of time to get set up, but once you have the press set up, you can get going in your spare time. Take a few hours out to punch out primers, or by winchesters already primed brass, and cut out a step, and still save money.

Morgan has a good tip - I didn't know MiWall was on the internet!!!

I am about 4K rounds of their 9mm with zero issues. 1K of 9mm is $95 when I grab it at a gun show... Not a bad price or quality.

I would say give em a try... I do know that .40 is a little different as far as tolerances go, but it just might work for you.

TMJ = Total Metal Jacket
FMJ = Full Metal Jacket

The FMJ leaves the base of the bullet with lead exposed, while the TMJ covers all of the lead. I suppose it might make a difference in the amount of vaporized lead in the air, in indoor ranges. Personally, I don't give a crap.

I buy from Miwall at the local gunshows (they go all over - check the site), thus avoiding shipping charges. Like I said, I've gone through thousands of their .40 without a hitch, and a bit of .223 and 9mm, as well. Good stuff, and they've been friendly and helpful - they even looked into what powders and charges they used for me when I had questions. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Morgan, thanks for the link on Miwall. I shopped around in their store at prices for 9mm ammo. They have very reasonable prices. I was particulary interested in the new manufactured 124 +p jhp, and the new 115 grain silvertips. I just wonder what bullet they are loading in 124 grain variety? I did not find much information about the company, but it did say it was a new site. Anyway, I will probably be buying some new ammo from them.

Cobra 4-6, if you are shooting enough that the difference is price will be $1000 per year, could you please adopt me? I need an allowance, say 200 rounds a month.

Gopher .45

Gopher -

Maybe my math is bad, but here's how I figured it:
1000 rds every 2wks @ $175 vs $135 = $40 savings every 2 weeks (or $20/wk). $20 x 52 weeks = $1,000 per year.

Anyway, I spoke to my wife and we've agreed to adopt you.

Thanks, Morgan! As usual, you're ahead of the curve on these type of things. I'll have to head up to little d for the next show and stock up on Miwall reloads, and maybe some Wolf ammo for my Makarov.

P.S. What's the sales tax rate in Denver?

------------------
Reading "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal," by Ayn Rand, should be required of every politician and in every high school.

"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined."
--Patrick Henry, during Virginia's Convention to Ratify the Constitution (1788)

DAL -

I buy when they're at the gun shows at the Holiday Inn on I-25 and Chambers in Aurora. According to the City of Aurora website:

Sales Tax Rate:

City of Aurora 3.75%
State 3.00%
RTD 0.60%
Cultural 0.10%
Baseball 0.10%
TOTAL 7.55%

It may be 8.05% - I don't know if that area is in the Adams County special tax district or not. I think it is.

If you want good selection, make sure you show up on Saturday morning of the show. By Sunday afternoon the pickings are mighty slim...
